COMMENTARY| Special prosecutor Angela Corey released several new jailhouse phone calls between George Zimmerman and his wife Shellie Zimmerman, and things do not look good for George. I have found myself siding with George on a lot of issues, regarding the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, such as he acted in self-defense. When George had his bond revoked, I thought it was just the prosecutor playing politics, but here is why these phone calls do actually prove he lied to the court.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that on June 18, audio calls between Shellie and George were released, as well as the transcripts of the conversations, which all point to Shellie and George acknowledging large amounts of money. The large amounts of money George had sitting in PayPal were from citizens donating to his defense fund, and these audio calls prove he spoke in code with Shellie to move the money around in their private bank accounts. On April 12, there were a total of eight different transfers from PayPal to George’s bank account, including one for $5,800.
In one of these calls, you can specifically hear George tell Shellie he wants her to buy them all bullet-proof vests, for their own protection, but this is not adding up to the things George said in court. George said during his bond hearing that he was indigent, which means he did not have any money at all, and if that was true, he could not afford bullet-proof vests. I thought Corey was just being pressured to revoke George’s bond, but you can clearly hear Shellie and George talking in coded language during each phone call. I thought one of the weirdest things was that George was talking about changing the security questions to his PayPal account, almost like he was not worried about being recorded by the jail, so that Shellie would have access to it.
I know that in the beginning of any jailhouse phone call, you are told you are being recorded, so that was not smart for George to openly discuss his PayPal account. It just does not make sense to me why he would be speaking in code with Shellie about having over $135,000 in his PayPal account, knowing how much of a microscope he is under. I also think that since these phone calls have been publicly released, it will make people think twice before donating any more money to George’s website. What really irked me, although I did not donate to his account, was that he openly talked about using the money to pay off bills and student loans. The money that people donated was supposed to go only for his defense fund, but George and Shellie took the money to pay off their own personal debts, which is really just disgusting. If George was so open and willing to lie about the PayPal money, then I wonder what else he has been untruthful about regarding Martin’s death.
