So it was a early Sunday morning and I couldn’t sleep. I was up and didn’t want to eat. I fumble around thinking what to do, to pass the time or make myself go back too sleep? I couldn’t come up with a thing and I wasn’t in the writing mood. There’s not much on the Internet that I do find fulfilling, Even through money is tight these days. I said, “What about it!” and ordered a on demand movie. With so many choices to choose from, it’s like nothing stays in the movie theaters for long. Even blockbusters! I mean who has time to go to the movies these days and just blow off 3 hours?
Hey I love to watch trailers, more then movies anyway. They are so exciting! When “The Avengers” trailer came on. The big kid in me said, “Whoa lets watch that!”. You just hit the pay button on your remote and instant movie. Now not telling my age, I remember when you had to call on the telephone and enter several numbers and you had to be on the schedule time, to watch the film. So the film starts immediately and I notice it’s over 2 hours. Great way to pass the time.
You know I love a good story, and what I love is just that. The story! Brought to life from the original material. My imagination becomes a reality. Comic books have always been sacred. My whole love I have enjoyed them and we only had Super Man and Batman as the films. That where brought to life. Even years later when The Punisher and The Hulk, would be storied on film and all the various super hero cartoons. They all employed continuity. That’s what made them favorable, to watch. That’s what made them real.
First let me tell you, that I am a bit of a Nick Fury fan, I am mean who’s not? S.H.E.I.L.D is a amazing story and organization. To a young futuristic child like me, they had all the cool technology. What’s not to love about that? So I was very upset and felt down right played, by the creative team for “The Avengers”. When I saw they had Samuel L. Jackson, still playing Nick Fury. I was aware that he played the role in a few other marvel backed films. You know small cameos with bit parts. No big deal. Make him totally out of continuity in the biggest and most waited marvel story every, was just plain disrespectful to the fans. Again not to tell my age, but I am a fan of “The Avengers” for at least 20 years. That’s being conservative. My critique on the portrayal of the character, “Nick Fury” isn’t just in the acting and the directing. That’s typical due to editing. I am referring to a black actor, playing a white male persona. That’s just a major distracting factor, from my enjoyment of the film.
Imagine, if you are a young child today. You go on line and type in, “Nick Fury”. Through your searches about the new greatest thing you just discovered, “The Avengers”. You still cross reference “Nick Fury” and learn that the portrayal of the character, for years has been a white male. Think of how confusing that would be? If you dig deeper you will learn that there was a film called, “Nick Fury: Agent of Shield”, where his portrayal is by a white male actor who is still around!
Hollywood knows that continuity, is a major distraction from the enjoyment of a film. That’s why they employ a person on the crew, who’s job it is to monitor all of that. It appears that’s not important in casting at all. They want to bring politics into it and change the mood and favor of the whole story. I am not knocking the talent of Samuel Jackson. The Nick Fury character, is a totally different take charge type of person. While Mr. Jackson, wasn’t really delivering that he’s in charge, of the most powerful organization in the world. Maybe that has to do with the life, he’s lived as a black man? So he can’t relate to the freedoms of society that a white male enjoys. Which is exhibited in their attitude.
Even looking past that. When I know the character, is supposed to be white in a story. I keep seeing everyone in the film call him, “Nick Fury” and smirking or having to hold back a chuckle, cause even they think it’s a bit ridiculous. Like, “Hey how can you play a white character”? I can’t really think about enjoying this film, because that makes me uncomfortable. If race isn’t a problem for casting? Just change all the ethnics and make all the characters be portrayed by different actors from another race. One Black actor, in the film as a Superhero doesn’t gain my respect, admiration or esteem. I rather you just create someone original, or just keep it within the continuity of the story. That’s the reason I order the film in the first place!
