A diet that is high in carbohydrates is not recommended when trying to lose weight. However, those trying to make healthier food choices can still enjoy sandwiches. Bread is not required for tasty and satisfying sandwiches of any variety. On the contrary, some of the tastiest combinations do not include bread. Use substitutes for buns and other breads and you will save approximately 150 calories per sandwich.
I began cutting back on carbohydrates, but I still enjoyed my favorite sandwiches. I did not buy over priced slices of bread that were half of the usual size. Instead of going without, I came up with a number of delicious substitutes. Some of the sandwiches that I have always enjoyed were better than ever. My healthy lifestyle change has been a painless transition with these delicious bread substitutes. I am still enjoying them months after beginning my quest for healthier options.
Eggplant Wheels are Delicious Bread Substitutes
When looking for bread substitutes I came up with a deliciously different options. My garden was filled with fresh eggplant, and I had to find ways to use it. Instead of preparing eggplant parmesan three nights a week, I decided to use the deep purple fruit as one of my healthy bread substitutes. I lightly sprayed a nonstick skillet with cooking spray, and I browned two peeled eggplant wheels on both sides. I topped my healthy bread substitutes with slices of tomato, lettuce, turkey breast and a dollop of lightly seasoned Greek yogurt. It was absolutely delicious, and I did not miss the bread at all.
Use Lettuce Wraps to Create Your Favorite Sandwiches
I did not want to use the same bread substitutes every day. I had to come up with something different for a unique and tasty change. I purchased romaine lettuce, and instead of making tossed salads, I used it to make healthy sandwich wraps. I filled my green bread substitutes with low fat tuna, chicken salad and turkey breast topped with shredded cabbage and seasoned Greek yogurt. The lettuce was crunchy and delicious, and the wrap possibilities were endless.
Apple Slice Peanut Butter Sandwiches
Peanut butter is healthy when enjoyed in moderation. I wanted to enjoy my favorite real fruit strawberry jam and natural peanut butter sandwiches, but I had to find bread substitutes that would taste great with sweet toppings. Lettuce and eggplant would not work. I had several extra large golden delicious apples in my fruit bin, and after coring one, I cut it into two half-inch circles. I topped the apple circles with peanut butter and jelly. I filled in the holes where the cores once were with fresh strawberry slices. They were scrumptious.
I am still looking for tasty new bread substitutes that will work with my healthy diet plan. Do you know of other great substitutes for bread? Feel free to share your favorites in the comment section. Together we can help others find healthy alternatives to buns, tortillas and bread.
