It’s that time of year, when every temptation will be out there for you. And by this I mean…
- holiday party after holiday party
- People bringing in “treats” to work
- Etc, etc, etc
And to make it worse, with all of the new time commitments, this is the time many of us are more likely than ever to skip a workout at the gym.
So to the end I am going to give you some holiday weight loss tips that will allow you to have fun without breaking the bank (or your waistline).
First though, you really need to decide how you are going to handle the holidays…and by the holidays I mean from mid-November to January 1st.
From my perspective, there are a few schools of thought…
1) Forget it…it’s the holidays. That is certainly one philosophy. Unfortunately these are also the people who join purchase the gym membership right after New Year’s yet cancel the membership by Valentine’s Day.
2) This is the year that I am going to eat perfectly for the holidays.
And Columbus was taking a boat ride one day and just got carried away.
This is the exact opposite of the “Forget It” philosophy but is also just as unrealistic. Unless you are Jack LaLanne you are going to give into temptation at some point.
3) The happy medium…which accomplishes what I refer to as the 50% solution, taking the good and bad from the first two points.
And here is the best way to institute the happy medium…
a) Give yourself the “get out of jail” free card for Thanksgiving and Christmas. You know you are going to overdo it, so just enjoy what is there on the dinner table, but understand that there is a means that you can naturally control these cravings.
Not only is water zero calories but it is also an appetite suppressor. So, eat what you want on these two days but drink copious amounts o water in order to stay full so you don’t eat as much as you normally would.
b) Enhance your willpower for the remaining days. Many people do not realize it but you can strengthen your willpower.
Your willpower comes from your brain, and your brain runs on sugar. So if you have normal blood sugar levels you are more likely to stay away from temptation than if your blood sugar is low because you haven’t eaten.
But this doesn’t give you carte blanche to lead up on the sweets. Eat foods like apples and cereals with are made up of complex carbs.
These carbs will get metabolized quickly into sugar and get into your blood stream fast. This rise in your blood glucose levels will allow you to keep your willpower high and avoid cheating.
In addition, many of these foods made of complex carbs, like the apples and cereals I mentioned, are loaded with fiber, which will make you feel full and eliminate hunger pangs. So the holidays are the time of year to load up on your cereals and fruits.
c) Make time to exercise. This is a challenge for many of us regardless of the time of year, but becomes especially apparent during the holidays. The cure to this is to be able to get the same type of workout in at home that you would at the gym, but how do you do this?
The answer is resistance bands, which are nothing more than an enormous rubber band with handles on them to simulate the use of dumbbells and free weights. With a set of resistance bands, and the accompanying door mount, you can do just about every strength training exercise done in the gym from the comfort of your living room.
And the best part is you don’t have to go to the gym or search for the time to go to the gym. Your living room is now your gym.
So make sure to eat plenty of fruits and whole grains, drink plenty of water, and keep the workouts going during the holidays, and you will put yourself in a position where the holidays will not go directly to your waistline.
