Friday, Aug. 10
The New Beverly begins its series “Films Shot at the Lot” (at Formosa and Santa Monica) with two Mary Pickford classics “My Best Girl” (1927) and “Sparrows” (1926). The double feature screens through Aug. 11 at 7165 Beverly Blvd. for $8.00. Check times.
The UCLA Film and Television Archive begins a tribute to actress Jean Arthur with “Whirlpool” (1934) and “The Whole Town’s Talking” (1935) at the Billy Wilder Theater at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00. The series runs through Sept. 28 at 10899 Wilshire Blvd.
The Academy presents Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” (1974) at dusk as part of its Oscars Outdoors summer series at 1341 Vine St. for $5.00.
“Puss In Boots” (2011) will air outdoors at the Dorothy Collins Brown Amphitheater behind LACMA at 5905 Wilshire at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Saturday, Aug. 11
Leni Riefenstahl’s controversial “Olympia” (1938) will screen at the Cinefamily at 3:45 p.m. for $12.00.
The movie that inspired Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming spaghetti western “Django Unchained” (2012), “Django” (1966) will screen at the Egyptian with “The Grand Duel” (1973) at 7:30 pm. Admission of $11.00 also gains one entry to a special screening of “A Bullet for the General” at 11:00 p.m. at 6712 Hollywood Blvd.
Cinespia will air “The Terminator” (1984) at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on the Fairbanks Lawn at 6000 Santa Monica Blvd. at dusk. Tickets are $10.00.
Sunday, Aug. 12
A couple of B-movie flicks by a young Budd Boetticher (the father of the minimalist western) “Escape in the Fog” (1945) and “Behind Locked Doors” (1948) screen at the Billy Wilder at 7:00 p.m. $10.00.
Monday, Aug. 13
The Academy will air “Spartacus” (1960) as part of its “Last 70MM Film Festival” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 8949 Wilshire at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00. A standby line will form at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 15
It’s the red carpet premiere of “The Expendables 2” (2012) starring Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, and Dolph Lundgren at Grauman’s Chinese at 5:00 p.m. Anyone may watch the stars arrive for free at 6925 Hollywood Blvd.
Another red carpet premiere will take place across town for Dax Shepard’s “Hit and Run” (2012) starring Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, and Kristin Chenoweth next to the Nokia Theater at LA Live. It’s free to watch the stars arrive at 5:00 p.m.
Steven Spielberg’s “Poltergeist” (1982) will screen at the New Beverly with “Rocky III” (1982) through Aug. 16. Check times. Actor Oliver Robins, who played Robbie Freling in the former film will appear for Q&A on Thursday, Aug.16, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8.00.
Doug Benson and his comedian friends will interrupt “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (2012) at the Cinefamily at 611 Fairfax at 8:00 p.m. for $14.00.
Thursday, Aug. 16
The late Whitney Houston’s last film “Sparkle” (2012) starring Jordin Sparks and Ceelo Green, among others, will have its red carpet premiere at Grauman’s Chinese at 5:00 p.m. Anyone may watch the stars, and Houston’s family and friends, arrive for free.
The Egyptian begins a four-night tribute to Ernest Borgnine with “Johnny Guitar” (1954) and “The Badlanders” (1958) at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $11.00.
