What you’ll need:
Cupcake wrappers filled with candy or nuts
Cardboard boxes filled with treats
If you’re going to be buying balloons for an upcoming party you might as well turn some of them into desserts, treats, and snacks. Whether you’re preparing for a child’s birthday party, or a couple’s wedding, balloons will be a colorful yet inexpensive way to decorate. But you can do more than decorate with the balloons; you can turn some of them into delicious treats. Hot air balloon cupcakes or candy cups are really easy to make when you fill the balloons with helium.
You don’t have to purchase special balloons. Just go to your nearest dollar-theme store, buy round balloons, and pay to have helium put in them. The helium balloons will serve as the hot air balloons to make the treats that you want for the birthday party, wedding, or other special occasion.
Besides the balloons, you’ll need ribbon. It doesn’t matter if you use ribbon made for sewing, or ribbon for wrapping packages, as long as it is very narrow. Cut four equal-size pieces for each balloon. The length will depend on how far over the “basket” that you want the balloon to hover.
If you’re making hot air balloon cupcakes, cut the four ribbon pieces for one cupcake, and tape one end of each ribbon to the balloon. The taped ribbon pieces should encircle the knot – a few inches out from the knot – and should be evenly spaced. Wrap a wider ribbon around the tape ends, and around the whole balloon, to cover the ends. Put a piece of tape on the bare end of each ribbon, and tape it to the outside of the cupcake wrapper.
Make hot air balloon candy cups by using cupcake wrappers. Place candy, nuts, or other goodies in each one, tape the ribbons to the balloon, and then tape the ribbon ends to the inside of the cupcake wrapper. The balloon will hover over the treat and look spectacular.
There are other hot air balloon treats, desserts, and snacks that a person can make. For example, cover a cardboard box with birthday or other paper, and attach the balloon to it. Fill it with party favors and/or candy.
Don’t have any ribbon? Wooden skewers, coffee stirrers, or even straws, can take the place of the ribbons. Although the ribbon replacements will be stiff they will still look great. Guests will remember the hot air balloon desserts and treats for years to come.
