When you cast your ship upon the mighty ocean for that long and arduous trip, it would behoove you to roll with the flow. If you disrespect the powers and wonders of the ocean, you put yourself in harm’s way. Although the skies were sunny, and the birds were happily singing when you set about your mission, if you did not prepare for the rough waters ahead, you may not be long upon this earth.
While visiting my grandson, from out of the blue, he asked me, granddaddy why is it necessary for us to die. I was surprised and stunned at the depth of his question. Before I uttered one word, I knew I had to give him an answer that he could possibly embrace for the rest of his life. At the time, he was only eight years old. I reasoned that the answer would have to be logical and reasonable. Otherwise, he would spend the rest of his days searching for that answer. I also realized he had a great deal of respect for me, and my answer would have a great impact on his future thinking in that regard. What was the answer I gave? I am not going to tell you now, I’ll tell you later.
I am told that I was born on a certain day, time, month and year. For the life of me, I can not recall any of those moments. Simply put, I had no input regarding my birth. I did not select my race, gender, color of eyes, parents, etc. Nonetheless, I am here among all the assortment of other people, who find themselves in the same situation.
When some among us becomes knowledgeable of the ways of life, they will use that knowledge to make slaves of other men. Some will use their knowledge to help others. The ones that uses their knowledge to enslave men must feel as though they are God’s special gift to mankind. On the other hand, those who have a propensity to look out for his fellow man understands that God loves all his children, and we should all learn to get along.
When it rains, I can curse it, or I can accept it. If I decide to curse the rain, I would be embarking upon a course of action that I absolutely have no control over. The same situation as my birth. My failure to roll with the flow of the rain, or any other aspect of nature will have an adverse affect on my health, i.e., stress, possible stomach aches, etc. When I accept and appreciate it, I am cognizant of the many uses of it, and how it enhances our lives. We need water to grow our crops so we can maintain a healthy diet, most importantly, we need water to drink. Without that water, mankind will not be able to survive.
Stop and think for a moment. Although we did not put in a request to be born, the fact of the matter is, if you are reading this, you are here. It is also a fact that since you were born, you will surely die. I am attempting to deal with that in-between time of life and death. I aspire to be forever peaceful.
Should I attempt to capture some of the pleasurable things in life, or should I become bitter because God did not make me as pretty as you. By the way, just because someone is pretty doesn’t mean they are inherently happy. You know for a fact that we all have ups and downs. When the seas get rough, weather the storm, because the sun maybe shining around the corner.
This article would not be complete and honest if I failed to acknowledge those among us who were born challenged. You will never hear me say I am blessed not be born with a certain affliction. To me, that implies God took a special liking for me and did not make me like that. Plan and simple, we must learn to accept things as God made them, and attempt to assist anyone we may encounter that needs a helping hand.
The answer I gave my grandson is the key that allows me to understand and appreciate the many blessings he has bestowed upon us.
When my grandson asked me the aforementioned question, we were assembling a race car track. It just so happened, that we differed on where a certain part should go. I used that analogy to get my point across. I explained that for whatever reason, God created us. Since God knows everything and has all the power, he has the ability to do whatever he pleases. I further stated, if he (grandson), wanted to build a toy or anything else, he would build it the way he wanted it to be built and not rely on someone, because he would be in control. I told him to look around and enjoy the many things he has before him, and when times are sad, find a way to enjoy the living moments.
The main point of this article is to present a way to get in step with God and all the wonders of this earth, even though we will experience may setbacks in life, on that last day on earth, it may be possible to look back with a smile and say, the smell of the roses was wonderful and I enjoyed the sunshine.
