It is necessary to write something everyday. It doesn’t matter so much what it is, the act of writing itself will bring on the muse. Just to type the first letter, or to put the pen to paper, this is what gets the creative juices flowing. There is much to be said for being given a life. For what we do with it is our individual choice, and being given this choice, doesn’t it make the greatest sense to live as authentically and as perfectly as we can? If the experiences are not what we wish they were, writers, we can rewrite them! We can rewrite them and relive them a second time through the words. We can define them on our own terms, these experiences.
Details are what place the reader inside the story. The reader becomes a part of the story when the details bring that story to life. The sky may be blue. But who among us hasn’t seen a blue sky? On the other hand, how many of us have had an opportunity to see a cobalt azule sky that is alighted with birds of winged glory? The details make all the difference in a story. The details are what differentiate between reading the story and living it. The details are what gift the reader with the ability to suspend their disbelief.
It is necessary to keep in mind that realizing one is a writer and choosing to follow that leading does not guarantee automatic success within the publishing world. Certainly one must follow the necessary business steps, for there is more to it than *just* the writing. But if you are truly a good writer and you find your voice, you will be met with success.
As a writer you may have to wait for what feels like a very long time for that success to come…
that acknowledgement by others of your talent. The important thing is to write, and to write every single day. Have more than one thing in process at any given time so there is minimal chance of writer’s block. (Does such a thing even exist? This writer is none too sure of that)
Climbing up the ladder towards success means stumbling, dealing with rejection, being overlooked. Don’t take it personally! Believe in your work and the power of your words. You are embarking on an incredible journey when you accept your destiny as a writer. For being a writer, of course, is not something we choose to do. It is something we realize we already are and choose to accept about ourselves.
There is meaning to be found in any and all situations. Take along a notebook to jot down ideas when the muse hits. You never know when the muse will rear his/her head and give you the next great idea. No story has yet to be written. What makes a story unique, is the voice that the author gives to it. So let your voice sing through! Don’t set out to write sounding like another. Inspiration is different than emulation. Write through your own voice! Our writing should be a natural expression of what we feel and think individually. For the essence of what you are at your very core will come through in your best stories.
Write about what you know. Write about what you love to read about. Write from your heart and from your imagination. But write! Write!
