Moving into a new place and need a few ideas on how to make your space sexy and sophisticated? Maybe your old place just needs a face lift? Here are some great tips on how to make your space just as fabulous as you are!
Play with color. Instead of picking a color that is hot right now, choose a color that makes you feel good. Paint shades influence a person’s mood tremendously, and picking colors that make you feel peaceful, will make you much happier to be home. Finding inspiration is things you love – sunsets, ocean, fall colors, or even taking a peek in your closet for the color palate you adore – will make it easier to revitalize your space and limit the times you need to paint!
Personalize your flooring. Especially if you have hardwood floors, finding the perfect rug can make or break your space. Hardwood is beautiful, but it needs items to add warmth. Once you find that perfect rug, accent your room with shades similar to the rug (i.e. throws blankets, curtains, or big pillows). This will create subtle elements throughout the space and give the room a finished look.
Conceal clutter. Nothing says slob more than a disorganized, messy room. When it comes to having a stylish space, organization is essential. Fortunately, so many home stores have items like fabric-covered boxes and bamboo baskets, which have made for stylish storage options that are very quick and easy.
Soften the lighting. It is definitely a must to have “task” or direct lighting in your space for those times when you read or have paperwork, but a safe rule of thumb is to have that lighting placed near a sofa or chair. To make a relaxed and flattering atmosphere, dim light is necessary. Overhead lights can easily have a dimmer switch installed or lamps that project upward can be used as indirect lighting.
Don’t skimp on the details. Trendy décor can be fun and interesting to have around your space; however, it can never replace your own personal things. A one-of-a-kind piece, items from vacation, or china that has been passed down to you, really adds character to any space and makes it more of your own. If you have a collection of items, you can arrange them in odd numbers, which will also add continuity without total predictability.
Maximize your space. Many people think that by pushing all their furniture against the walls in their rooms, they will be maximizing space. However, this is completely opposite of the truth. If you truly want to make your room appear bigger, the furniture needs to give the appearance of floating in the room, which will make the room look less-defined and in the end maximize your space.
Get luxurious bedding. An average person spends 8-9 hours of their day sleeping; this is well worth investing in bedding that is a bit extravagant. From fluffy down comforters to high tread count (as high as you can afford, try to stay above 300) to oversized pillows in so-soft textures – your bed is your sanctuary, so treat it with lush linens.
Add sensational character. You never want your pad to fall flat, so by adding aromas that invoke pleasant memories of your favorite vacation or desired foods, you will enjoy your space even more. Also, mixing different materials together can bring out the best character in each one. For instance, drape a plush throw across a leather armchair or top a white shaggy rug with a cool metal table.
No matter which color scheme, bedding, or extra character you add to your space – make sure that it is an area that every day when you kick up your feet you will not only be happy, but proud of the space you designed!
