Nowadays you will find that a lot of the items we buy at the supermarkets come in plastic containers. Most of your seasonings and spices come in plastic containers, and many people just usually toss them out. As a homeschooling parent however one thing that I have learned to do over the years is how to reuse old items for schooling purposes.
Spice and seasoning containers usually have strong scents and odors left over in them. Start by removing the labels from the containers. Taking the time to clean them out properly will help to ensure that you don’t end up with a home full of bugs. Usually soaking the containers in soapy dish liquid for several hours will help to get rid of the strong scent. You can also add in a teaspoon of baking soda to help with the scent as well. The tops of the seasoning jars are often the most difficult to clean. Rinsing them off properly will help to ensure nothing is missed or left behind. Once they have been cleaned properly you can allow them to air dry.
Small item storage
The small containers are great for holding some of your child’s school items. Some of the things you can store in them include eraser’s, small counting blocks, and even pencils in the larger containers. Some like to store coins in the seasoning containers as well. When your children are just learning about money, you can use them to separate the coins. For example one container can hold pennies, another can hold nickels, and so on. When it is time to practice counting the coins you will have no problem finding what you need when you need it. If you don’t want to use real coins, you can use paper cut out coins. You can find several coin printable worksheets available online. Print them out, and then cut them out, and put them in the right container. For homeschooling parents you can also store your paper clips in the containers or other small items you will need for the school day.
Once you decide what items are going into each container you will want to make sure that they are properly labeled. You can use your computer to print out stick on labels. This will make it a lot easier for your children to find things when they need them.
Converted spice rack
If you have a portable spice rack or an extra cabinet you can use, you can easily convert the spice rack. Once you have filled all the old containers with the items that you want you can place them on the racks, or build a shelf yourself. Place them in the homeschooling area, so that they can easily be accessed.
