Everyday we try to stretch our dollar. We try to find ways to cut down on cost with this every dwindling economy. After receiving a promising offer from my employer of a serious 2.25% increase while at the same time receiving notice that my family health insurance would increase by an astonishing 20% for my family and 9% for myself, the math did not add up. Although I cant do much about this situation, I could however try to reduce my spending and save money somewhere else.
There are ways that people can save money without getting rid of certain needs. Lets start with one of the most common items that people have today, the cellphone. At one point I tried to be without a cellphone to see how I can manage. I thought to myself I am always at work and whenever I am at home there would be no need for a cellphone. But when you have spent a great part of your life with this device waiting on your disposal 24/7, all of a sudden you realize that you cannot live without it. Trust me I tried and I could not. So, instead of getting rid of it I decided to find alternatives in cutting down my cost of the cellphone bill. I originally had T-Mobile service for about 2 years. It was 2 years because I was suckered into the contract. After that I switched over to AT&T. Again the 2 year commitment. But as I started to explore other options, I soon found out that prepaid services did not necessarily had to be bad just because the word prepaid was in front of it.
Doing some investigative work I found out that most of these prepaid services use the big boys equipment in order to provide their own service. Take an example of a company called NET10. NET10 is a company that provides cellphone service at a great cost compared to the big boys. This particular company gives you unlimited minutes, unlimited text, and if you have a smartphone with 3G capability it will offer you unlimited web. With the price tag starting at $50 a month and if you sign up with automatic payment debit, they knock off an additional $5 from your monthly service ending up at roughly $48, I think its a great deal. Other services such as Straight Talk offered through Wall-Mart are also great deals. With plans starting at $45 a month and again unlimited, the deals just keep on coming. I personally went from a plan that I was paying nearly $120 a month for limited minutes for two phones with limited texting and now web/Internet access to a plan that provides unlimited everything for two phones for less than $90 a month, I think I made a good decision in ditching the old plan and saving a ton of money. One thing that I forgot to mention was that with these prepaid plans there is never a contract.
Now some people might think if they have cellphone services then why get a home phone. Well the way that I see it, I have two kids, a third on her way, and a wonderful wife that I need to keep in contact with and other great family members to talk to, then why not. Trying to add another bill every month was out of the question when searching for alternatives. But I was able to find one, and its awesome. There is a company out there called net-Talk and they provide a device called the net-Talk Duo. This little device is kind of like the magic jack but only better. The reason I think its better is that all you have to do is connect it to your router rather than your computer. For this reason you don’t have to keep your computer on at all times in order for the device to work and you don’t have to turn your computer on in order to make calls. Best of all this device now costs less than $60 with a one year service. Whenever the year is over all you have to do is renew your service for an additional year for a whooping $30 a year of telephone service. You definitely cant go wrong. I can make calls all across the US as well as Canada. Now that is a great deal. I have had the device for more than two years and I have had no problems whatsoever. Its definitely a great money saver.
Now the last device that I have instituted in my home to save money, my kids love in particular. It is a digital antenna that provides high quality television reception for local channels. Now some people might think local channels, 6 to 10 channels, I don’t think so. Currently once I program my antenna, which is real simple to do, provides me with roughly 45+ channels that I can watch. There are the normal local channels that you can watch from whichever area you currently live in as well as additional channels that pop up. There are channels for entertainment, kids channels in my residing area, educational channels. Best of all the antenna that I have is about the size of a 20″ computer monitor, its water resistant, is installed outside where my dish used to be and it can be connected through the wires that my dish left behind. The price tag that will set your wallet back: $40. Not bad for receiving television channels (45+ of them) for $40. And that is $40 for life not monthly. I have not paid for television services for over 4 years now and it feels great.
There are other services that I am currently using that make me money. Its nothing to retire on or leave your job but it certainly gives you a little here and there and whenever you need it you can use it at your disposal. I will be providing you folks with this juicy bit of information in the next installment. But for now I hope that you can benefit from this bit of information that I am putting out there. I am definitely saving money and have been doing so for some time. Hope that you can save during times like this and that this provides some relief for you and your loved ones in times like this. Thanks again for reading my article and I hope that you share with others.
