How to Turn Old Umbrellas into Spring Décor

by pop tug

Have you ever had an old umbrella suddenly break on you? It happens all the time, especially during the windy and rainy spring months. Most of the time the umbrellas just end up in the garbage. If you are feeling a little creative however, you may be able to use it to decorate your home for the spring months. Below you will find five creative ways to decorate using old umbrellas.

1. Decorate with color

With spring you need to have color, this means that the umbrella you will be using for this project will also need to have a splash of color. If your umbrella does not have any naturally bright colors to work with, no need to worry. You will just need to choose brighter flowers to decorate with to really make it come alive. Fresh flowers can work really well, by cutting them at the base of the stem and then sticking them inside of the umbrella. Keep in mind that they will not live very long this way, which is why many choose to stick artificial flowers into the umbrella. If you have a black colored umbrella you can really make it stand out by adding flowers with a lot of color. Before placing the flowers inside of the umbrella make sure it is closed and secured. The umbrella can then be hung upside down.

2. Decorate with ribbons

Ribbons come in a variety of sizes and colors. You can easily tie ribbon around the umbrella from top to bottom. Why not try stacking the colors and changing them up as you go. Some like to tie the ribbons into nice bows, and shapes to make them stand out.

3. Add some decals

Most stores sell little stick on decals. These decals can easily be added to a variety of material including the same material that umbrellas are made out of. Go for decals that say spring. For example you can go with pictures of sunflowers, or kids playing outdoors. Then hang the umbrella in the corner of a room and leave it open so that all of the decals can clearly be seen.

4. Trace and cut

You can also choose to trace and cut out different shapes. This is one project that your kids will truly enjoy making with you. This is a really good craft, if your umbrellas is already ripped or torn in certain spots. It may seem weird at first cutting out the shapes from your umbrellas but it will look really nice when you hang it up to be displayed.

5. Outdoor use

If you prefer not to use it indoors why not add it as a nice fixture to your yard. An old umbrella can be used to protect your garden, while decorating it at the same time.
