Allergies can cause numerous symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing and congestion. Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? You are probably well acquainted with these symptoms and more. Eucalyptus oil is a natural allergy remedy I have recently discovered. It helps to relieve a handful of the various symptoms you might be experiencing due to seasonal allergies.
Allergy symptoms that can be treated with eucalyptus oil
Eucalyptus oil smells like a very potent, minty concoction. It comes in a small bottle and is pretty inexpensive to buy in retail stores. Inhaling the scent can help to loosen up sinus congestion and congested lungs, as well as temporarily relieve coughing and a stuffy nose. It recently even helped temporarily unplug and relieve pressure in my ear, which was congested due to sinuses. If you are taking any medications, talk with your doctor before using eucalyptus oil, as it can interact with various drugs.
Methods for relieving allergy symptoms with eucalyptus oil
Eucalyptus oil is toxic when taken internally, and should always be diluted. It is available in various forms, such as over-the-counter lozenges, cough syrup, rubs and vapor baths. For congestion, I like to boil a pot of water with a few drops of eucalyptus oil, then remove the pot from the burner, cover my head with a towel and inhale the steam for about ten minutes. If it gets too hot, back away or let some of the steam escape from under the towel. You can also place a few drops of the oil in your humidifier and run it overnight.
How effective is eucalyptus oil in relieving allergy symptoms?
It has provided miraculous results a couple times when I’ve had bad seasonal allergies. Last summer, my lungs were so congested that I couldn’t talk. Nothing was helping. So I finally tried inhaling steam with a touch of eucalyptus oil and ran the humidifier overnight. The next morning, it had loosened up enough that I was able to cough everything up and I had my voice back.
Just recently, my ear became clogged after dealing with a number of allergy symptoms. I tried the steam trick again, and I could feel the fluid draining from my sinuses. Soon after, I could hear again. For the next few mornings, my ear was plugged again when I woke up, but after a few days of natural treatment, it cleared up.
I have found eucalyptus oil to be an effective natural remedy for relieving allergy symptoms. If you suffer from seasonal allergies or sinus infections, you might benefit from it, too. Be sure to check with your doctor before using eucalyptus oil if you have asthma, are pregnant or are taking any other type of medicine.
