Howard Stern (King of All Media) is a shock jock who scores radio controversy – satellite radio that is. He’s also judge on NBC’s hit show, ‘America’s Got Talent’, and just signed for a second season. In 2006, he left terrestrial radio, where he broadcast raw mania and tangled with icons like Don Imus at WNBC and 92 K-ROCK in NYC, then launched into pay to listen satellite radio. King Stern now holds court on SiriusXM, amid mainstream fare like Oprah and Martha Stewart. He’s quick to say he can’t take sole credit for his success and has lauded co-host, Robin Quivers, as one who meshed with him so well, it’s endeared him to millions of loyal fans. Loony luminaries like Stuttering John and Jackie ‘The Jokeman’ Martling were sidekicks for years. They’ve since left, but fans remember them fondly. Recently, wacky clown of pain Steve O (Jackass) chatted with Stern and said he missed Artie Lange (MadTV) being on the show.
Jackie ‘The Jokeman’ Martling
He was great at delivering a punchline – even if the joke wasn’t so hot. He loved his precious jetty, and ever since leaving Howard Stern’s show, he now has way more time to spend hanging on it. The jolly Jokeman hasn’t achieved immortal fame, but he does have a following of a sort. One of his big functions for Stern was his ability to come up with a joke on the spot during a show – regarding some guest of the moment or topic of the day – then hand it over to Stern on a post-it note. Above all else, Martling is known for his long stint as a Stern writer. He did the job for 18 years, and now has a show on the Howard Stern Sirius Network called, Jackie’s Joke Hunt.
Stuttering John (John Edward Melendez)
He brought awareness and even fame to stutterers everywhere, and many of them hated him for it. Stuttering John Melendez was the go to guy on Stern for those nasty celebrity interviews, where the Stuttering icon asked male stars how big their penis was or demanded the cup size for a famed female. He ended up leaving the Howard Stern wack pack to go to Hollywood to work for Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ line-up as a staff writer and as show announcer – Jay’s Ed McMahon. Howard was not happy about Leno ‘stealing’ away Stuttering John from him, and it created a rift between the talk titans that’s never really healed.
You may not know the name, nor the face, but you probably know the voice. West is a talented vocal artist who’s lent his gymnastic vocals to dozens of well known animated characters. West summoned up a host of crazed characters on Howard Stern for many years, then he went off to work in Hollywood on such big shows as ‘Ren & Stimpy’ voicing Stimpy. He’s perhaps most known to fans of animated comedy as the man out of time Fry on FOX’s Futurama.
First spotted in a big way on FOX’s skit comedy show, ‘Mad TV’, this rotund rambler made his way onto the Howard Stern world after the departure of Jackie ‘Jokeman’ Martling, but ultimately couldn’t last at the gig. Taking over for Martling in 2001 and leaving in 2009, Lange lasted eight years on Stern’s show. Lange has been mired in substance abuse problems for years, and he attempted suicide in 2010, which led to months of observation in a psychiatric ward.
