It was a great day to be outdoors playing in the woods which was what I was doing when I heard my mother calling me. As I turned my ear in the direction of her voice I jumped up from the log and started running along the path that led to the house.
When I arrived, mother told me to go to Mrs. Katherine’s house; about half mile down the road, to borrow a cup of sugar. Off I went barefoot and carefree. I took my good old time; singing, skipping and stopping to catch a few grasshoppers.
I counted each step as I slowly climbed the stairs to Mrs. Katherine’s door. I peeked thru the curtains at the door window but I didn’t see anyone so I knocked; no one came to the door. I knocked again but no one came. Once again I peeked thru the sheer curtains at the door window and glanced upward at the stairs; I saw a man coming down the stairs. I said to myself “who is that” I knew Mrs. Katherine, her husband and their children, but I’d never seen this man before. His appearance looked unusual.
I’ll never forget his appearance. His color was a misty grey; that’s what made him look so uncanny. He had on a white tee shirt and a pair of tweed brown pants with suspenders and brown shoes. His hair was a grayish white. I noticed his every detail as he slowly advanced down the stairs. About half way down the stairs I noticed he had a long silver object in his hands. I pressed my nose harder against the glass window; cupped my hands around my face to block the glare and get a closer look. What I saw startled me; I gasped. It was a rifle.
My grandfather was a hunter so I’d seen a rifle before. However, I’d never seen a rifle like the one the man was holding. It was approximately 36 in. long; its color was silver and the base of the rifle was designed with holes in it from one end to the other.
The rifle was pointed straight towards the door so naturally I thought he was coming towards me. As he continued to advance down the stairs I stood there in shock, frozen. When he stepped off the last step I gasped again not really thinking, just standing there stunned . I had no idea what his next move was going to be; then to my surprise he turned the corner as if to go in another room; it was as if he’d never seen me . After he turned the corner, I pulled myself together and started running home as fast as I could. By the time I reached home I had a busted big toe and I was hyperventilating. My mother ran towards me asking “what’s wrong.”
Breathing uncontrollable I told her the story and begged her to go back with me to Mrs. Katherine’s house because she might be hurt. After calming me down she escorted me back to Mrs. Katherine’s house. When we arrived my mother knocked and Mrs. Katherine came to the door. I told her the story and she told my mother that I was a big liar and had the devil in me. She claims she’d been in the tub and never heard anyone knocking and no one was home except her.
To this day, no one believed my story, but I know I saw what I saw.
