It all started on a cold autumn day. This day had to be one of the most exciting days of my life, or so I thought.
Just 12 hours earlier three of my friends and I started a line at our local Game Stop anticipating the release of Halo 2. 18 Starbucks cups later and 40 of our closest friends managed to have a Halo standing in line party. We spent thirteen hours of our life in that cold line just to a play a game.
Of course the four of us all immediately went home fired up our Xbox’s and spent the next 12 hours playing an amazing game. My three friends signed off for the night so they could go to work and of course I stayed up for another 10 hours. As the weeks went on all I could do was play this game. As the months went by my friends became bored and didn’t even want to play anymore. They would invite me places and I would just blow them off. My best friend at the time would joke and say that I would never find a girlfriend or ever have a love life again.
By now I was playing with the same person online everyday but they didn’t seem to ever have a headset. Out of the blue one day this online friend purchased a headset and she turned out to be a girl. Suddenly we were making dates online and talking every night while killing aliens online. She was really shy at first but finally she agreed to meet in person.
The night before we were supposed to meet and I was super nervous and then suddenly my doorbell rang. It was this really cute woman from across the hall that all of my friend’s months earlier had told me to talk to. She asked me what I was doing for dinner and if I would like to join her. At this point I had no idea what to think. I went from this lame gamer and no prospect for a love life to suddenly two women.
Back to my neighbor Stephanie; she was very persistent and really wanted me to come over. Really confused and shocked I decided why not. Stephanie was cooking Mac-N-Chesse with bacon. I fell in love with this meal. How is it that I have lived across the hall from this woman for years and never had the courage to even talk to her. Our conversation consisted of everything from gay marriage to embarrassing high school moments to our first crush. Amazingly we had the best conversation and it seemed as though we could talk for hours about anything. Later that night as I was leaving she gave me a big hug and we said good night.
All at once it hit me that this was the first time in six months that I didn’t think about gaming. Then I realized that in less than 24 hours I would be meeting my new best friend from Xbox Live. Needless to say I couldn’t sleep and my online friend joined my game. We talked for a few hours and then finally went to bed.
The next morning on the way to work I felt a little guilty and called off the meeting with my online crush. I could tell that she was devastated, so much in fact that she deleted her Xbox account. All day was really bitter sweet, did I make a mistake? What if this girl online was really the one?
When I pulled up to my house later that afternoon, Stephanie was just getting out of her car. I could tell that she was a little unhappy so I decided to go talk to her. She asked me what my plan was for the night as her plans had suddenly changed and invited me back to her apartment.
Our conversation seemed to pick up exactly where it left off. Except this time I noticed that she had an Xbox controller and headset. When I asked her about it she seemed a little embarrassed. Immediately I told her that I was a huge gamer and geek-ed out for a second. She had this huge smile on her face and geeked-out with me. We kissed and decided to play a game. Her screen name popped up “Master-Phanie” and I gave her this crazy look.
This was my Halo buddy! I had just cancelled our date and she was upset when she got home. Seriously how is this possible?! Feeling overwhelmed with emotion I asked her why she looked upset when she got home. She was really reluctant but finally told me about this really amazing guy she met playing Halo and how she didn’t really want to date him because of the friendship. They were supposed to meet that night and he canceled.
At that moment I fell in love with Stephanie and told her the truth. We have been married for 4 amazing years. We started a game testing company so that we can play games together every day and go home to our amazing conversations that have nothing to do with gaming.
November 9th will always be the day that Halo 2 came out and a year later on the same day as the happiest moment of my life when I married my wife. I love cold Autumn days!
For all of those people that say love can’t happen playing games. I say nah, the universe has a plan!
