Among my favorite foods to eat for dessert are Klondike Bars (http://www.klondikebar.com). These frozen treats feature creamy vanilla ice cream topped with a milk chocolate coating that makes them absolutely delicious. Although several different varieties of Klondike Bars are now available I prefer to eat the Original vanilla and chocolate variety.
For the past few months a couple of stores in my neighborhood have been selling Haagen-Dazs Vanilla & Milk Chocolate ice cream bars (http://www.haagendazs.com) and I decided to purchase one of them recently. As I was eating the Haagen-Dazs ice cream bar a couple of nights ago I couldn’t help but compare it to the Original Klondike Bar.
Presented here as a service to the consumer at large is a comparison of Original Klondike Bars and Haagen-Dazs Vanilla & Chocolate ice cream bars.
The net weight of one Original Klondike Bar is 4.5 fluid ounces. The ice cream bar is square in shape and is usually just the right size to satisfy my appetite for sweets.
The net weight of the Haagen-Dazs Vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar is 3.0 ounces. The bar is big enough to satisfy my sweet tooth but I find the Klondike bar to be more satisfying overall.
The regular retail price charged for one Original Klondike Bar at Hartford, Connecticut food retailers varies. On average the price of one bar is roughly $1.29-$1.69.
The regular retail price charged for one Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar at Hartford, Connecticut area food retailers also varies. The only price that I’ve paid for one of these bars is $1.99.
Texture / Consistency
To me the texture of food items is almost as important as the flavor. Both of these ice cream bars offer pleasing textures but I think I prefer the texture of the Original Klondike bar a little bit more than that of the Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar.
Both ice cream bars feature nice milk chocolate coatings but the coating on the Haagen-Dazs bar seems to be a little thicker than the coating on the Original Klondike Bar.
When you bite into either one of these ice cream bars there is a nice contrast between soft ice cream and crisp milk chocolate coating. The milk chocolate coating on the Klondike Bar offers more of a ‘snap’ or crunch when it is bitten into and the Haagen-Dazs bar contains a drizzling of additional milk chocolate atop the regular milk chocolate coating. The Haagen-Dazs ice cream also seems to be much denser in texture.
The three ounce Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar contains 280 calories. This bar also contains 13 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 20 grams total fat, 55 mg of cholesterol, 40 mg of sodium, 21 grams total carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of dietary fiber, 20 grams of sugars and 4 grams of protein per one bar serving.
The Original Klondike Bar contains 250 calories with 130 calories from fat per one bar serving. This bar also contains 11 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 14 grams total fat, 10 mg of cholesterol, 70 mg of sodium, 29 grams total carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of dietary fiber, 23 grams of sugars and 3 grams of protein per one bar serving.
Taste / Flavor
Each of these ice cream bars certainly does offer lots of flavor. While they are similar products they definitely do not taste exactly the same.
The milk chocolate coating on the Original Klondike Bar looks and tastes darker than the milk chocolate coating on the Haagen-Dazs bar to me. To my tastebuds the contrast between milk chocolate coating and vanilla ice cream with the Klondike Bar tastes better than the contrast offered with the Haagen-Dazs bar. The chocolate itself on the Klondike Bar appeals to me a little more than the chocolate on the Haagen-Dazs bar.
The vanilla ice cream in the Haagen-Dazs bar tastes much richer than the vanilla ice cream in the Klondike Bar but I think the vanilla ice cream in the Klondike Bar is just as good, only lighter.
On a flavor scale of one through ten I would assign the Original Klondike Bar an almost never-assigned rating of 10.
On a flavor scale of one through ten I would assign the Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar a rating of 9.50.
The Original Klondike Bar is simply packaged in a metallic silver paper wrapper. The wrapper features an illustration of a white polar bear set against a dark blue half-circle and it is easy to open and reclose.
The Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar is packaged in a largely red and gold cardboard box that features an illustration of the enclosed bar on the front. The box is easy to open and it recloses effectively.
If you’re an ice cream fan and more specifically a fan of ice cream bars its hard to not like either of these ice cream bars. Although I slighty prefer eating the Original Klondike Bar I also very much enjoy eating the Haagen-Dazs vanilla & milk chocolate ice cream bar. Both products are recommended but I would also recommend buying them in multi-packs which makes them more economical.
