Ice Cream Comparison : Breyers Cookies & Cream Vs Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream

by pop tug

Like many other people I am a big fan of ice cream and I eat it almost every night. Within the past month I have purchased two different brands of cookies and cream ice cream and I think they would be good products to compare.

Presented here is an article which compares Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream

Size
The containers of Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream being reviewed here are 48 ounce containers.

The containers are fairly large and require a decent amount of freezer space.

Price
The regular retail price charged for both of these brands of ice cream fluctuates greatly here in the Hartford, Connecticut area but is normally around $4.00.

Quite often both of these brands of ice cream are on sale at local supermarkets and pharmacies at substantial savings. When I purchased each of these ice creams they were on sale.

Texture / Consistency
Both Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream offer pleasing textures. Each brands’ vanilla ice cream is smooth and creamy and the cookie pieces accentuate rather than overpower the ice creams.

It looks to me like the Edy’s ice cream contains more pieces of cookies but the pieces in the Breyers ice cream seem a little bit bigger. Although I really enjoy the Edy’s product, I think I slightly prefer the texture of the Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream.

Nutritional Facts
Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream contains 140 calories with 40 calories from fat per 1/2 cup serving. This ice cream also contains 2.5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 4.5 grams total fat, 10 mg of cholesterol, 85 mg of sodium, 23 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 15 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein per 1/2 cup serving.

Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream contains 150 calories with 60 calories from fat per 1/2 cup serving. This ice cream also contains 4 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 7 grams total fat, 20 mg of cholesterol, 60 mg of sodium, 19 total carbohydrates, 0 grams of dietary fiber, 15 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein per 1/2 cup serving.

Taste / Flavor
The flavors of Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream are similar but not identical. Although I definitely purchase and consume various flavors of Edy’s ice cream more than Breyers ice cream I think I like the flavor of the Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream a little more than the Edy’s Grand Cookies & Cream Ice Cream.

Interestingly, I really like the taste of the vanilla ice cream in the Breyers product but I also like the taste of the cookies in the Edy’s ice cream. Don’t get me wrong, the Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream is very good but I like the balance of flavors in the Breyer’s product better.

On a flavor scale of one through ten, I would assign Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream a rating of 9.50 and Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream a rating of nine.

Packaging
Because each of these ice cream containers holds 1.5 quarts they are fairly substantial in physical size. The Edy’s container is round and canister-like in shape and the Breyers container is oblong-shaped, sort of like a rounded rectangle.

The freezer in my refrigerator is fairly small and I find it somewhat difficult to store the Edy’s container when the freezer contains a good amount of other items. With its oblong shape the Breyers container can be easily stored on its side or standing up.

The Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream features a very stylish label. A closeup photo of the enclosed ice cream is set against a black background. The jazzy label is accentuated by one green leaf that is attached to the Breyers logo.

The label on the Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream is brown and white and features a closeup photo of the enclosed ice cream.

Overall Rating
All things considered, both of these varieties of cookies and cream ice cream are quite tasty and they both offer pleasing textures that are smooth on the tongue.

Some varieties of cookies and cream ice cream are too sweet for my tastebuds but these varieties are not offensively sweet. While I slightly prefer the overall flavor and texture of Breyers Cookies & Cream Ice Cream I would also recommend Edy’s Grand Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream.
