Red is naturally bright and cheerful, and it is the ideal hue when setting a formal or informal summer dining table. I helped a client come up with ideas for setting a red dining table for an early summer celebration. It was to become part of her decorating scheme, and the design was a huge success. We chose ruby red tableware and incorporated white and yellow accents into the decorating scheme. From the chargers to the table linens, they were a gorgeous color combination.
Begin with Table Linens or Placemats
Placemats are considered informal, but not when trying to showoff a beautiful oak dining table. When setting a red dining table for summer, my client and I decided to go with placemats rather than a tablecloth. She wanted her new oak table remain exposed, and I agreed with her decision. After all, why cover up a beautiful high-quality piece of furniture? Placemats were enough to add design, color and protection.
Since the table setting was going to consist of tableware in solid hues, we opted for patterned placemats. We found beautiful red poppy placemats with a lily white background. They were perfect, especially since she planned on hosting an indoor dinner with a flower garden theme. She was celebrating the release of her third book on flower gardening, and she wanted everything to look just right for the occasion.
Consider Setting a Dining Table with Red Chargers and White Plates
When setting a dining table in red, consider white plates. They are the ideal background when trying to accentuate the food. The plate becomes the canvas, and high quality food is a form of art. Set the white plates on top of beautiful red chargers. I suggested white plates, red chargers and red salad bowls to my client. After seeing the pieces together in the store, she absolutely loved the idea. They would look lovely on the red poppy placemats, and each setting would beautifully highlight the food.
Opt for Red Cloth Napkins with White Floral Napkin Rings
I always recommend cloth napkins when setting a beautiful dining table. My client and I chose ruby red cloth napkins, and I suggested a number of beautiful white floral napkin rings. They would look stunning next to the deep red fabric. She selected a set of gorgeous mother of pearl napkin rings that had been artfully fashioned into flower blooms. The layers of white and red made each setting look like a fine work of art, but the best was yet to come.
Create a Beautiful Red and White Floral Centerpiece
The signature piece of my client’s dining table included a considerable amount of red and white, and it would also include natural bright yellow accents. I created a beautiful red and white floral centerpiece using a combination of red roses and white daisies with sunny yellow centers. I placed red flat glass marbles in the base of the clear vase to add even more color to the gorgeous centerpiece. It was the last step in setting my client’s summer dining table, and it turned out to be the highlight of her home and her indoor garden party.
