After volunteering on Midway Atoll in the Pacific, I found that I wanted to be in better shape again, and took some advice we had received from our volunteer coordinator on Midway. I decided to cut back on sugar and I saw an almost immediate improvement in my overall physique. It’s at the point now where I think it’s better than it has ever been. I wish to explain in this article how a sugar cutback has allowed me to quickly burn any excess fat off my body. I hope to impart to you, the reader, the importance of cutting back on sugar for health benefits and a better physique.
On Midway, our volunteer coordinator had given us some advice about the best way to lose weight. He had been a nutritionist before going into wildlife biology. He brought up sugar as being the best thing to cut back on, as opposed to fats. He explained that the cells that make up our body use sugar to make energy, and that the sugar we eat is fuel for those cells. However, he explained that if we were to cut back on eating sugar our body would start looking elsewhere to find that sugar. Our bodies would start taking that sugar from fat cells, burning them off in the process. He said if people are looking to lose weight it should be sugar more than fat that people should regulate in their diet. As long as sugar is eaten at high levels, our bodies won’t burn off fat as quickly.
Upon returning to Arizona, I joined a local health club. I was regularly exercising there and gaining muscle, but my overall body fat was not decreasing. The trainers there said the answer must be in the food I am eating. They reaffirmed the importance of cutting back on sugar in order to decrease body fat. They recommend eating no more than 12 grams of sugar per meal. I took their recommendation into practice and I almost immediately saw a decrease of fat build up in certain areas. My overall muscle definition that has come from the exercising at the health club is much more noticeable as a result.
The Atkins Diet that has influenced so many people recommends low sugar dieting. The Atkins Diet also says that low sugar diets will provide steady energy throughout the day and help to prevent insulin spikes that can lead to diabetes and other health problems. (Atkins) These are of course the unseen health benefits of a low sugar diet, which are very important, but if you’re looking to get in visual shape for the summer beach season, sugar is what you should cut back on.
Americans consume 156 pounds of sugar each year. (Phillip, Technorati) That consumption rate is increasing. There is a debate amongst lawmakers as to whether or not to tax sodas like cigarettes. The American Medical Association has suggested taxing sugar products like soda to curb the growing obesity problem in the U.S. (Steenhuysen, Reuters) While this might bring the government some much-needed revenue, I don’t believe it will curb the increasing problem of sugar consumption in America. The best thing to do would be to regulate the amount of sugar that food companies can place in their products, but that’s no doubt going to be a legal battle. The best thing we can do in the meantime is use our own willpower to cut back on sugar and ultimately our weight.
The best way to watch how much sugar you’re eating is to read the nutrition labels on the packages. My health club says that 12 grams of sugar per meal should be the maximum amount. If you’re a soda drinker like me, you should switch over to diet sodas that have no sugar content. Some of those 20-ounce soda bottles in the convenience stores have 72 grams of sugar! You should also buy the sugar free candies that are available at the grocery store. (I have yet to see them in the convenience stores.) Cut back on the sugar and I’m very confident that you too will see some excellent physical results.
