A vintage craft that has been around for many years is a poodle made with yarn and a wire hanger. Four-ply yarn is used to make this adorable, curly haired poodle. This hand-crafted cuddly poodle makes a great companion or an excellent gift.
Things You’ll Need:
Wire coat hanger
4 ounce skein of 4-ply yarn
¾ inch black pompom
2, 1-inch googly eyes
Scrap red felt
1 yard ¾-inch ribbon
Step 1 – Hold the wire coat hanger by the hook. Firmly grip the bottom of the coat hanger directly below the hook. Pull your arms apart to elongate the triangular part of the coat hanger into a long loop.
Step 2 – Bend the tip of the hook toward the long loop. Stop bending when the tip of the hook is even with the wire creating the long loop. A circle-like shape is created. This is the portion of the coat hanger that creates the head.
Step 3 – Bend the head section at a 90 degree angle to the long wire loop. The bend creates the neck of the poodle.
Step 4 – Hold the long loop so your little finger is touching the base of the head. Make a 90 degree bend by your forefinger. Move your hand so your little finger touches the bend. Make a second 90 angle bend. The front legs are created.
Step 5 – Move your hand so your little finger touches the bend. Make a 90 degree angle. Repeat this process two more times to create the back legs and tail.
Step 6 – Measure, mark and cut a 2 ½-by-4 inch rectangle from cardboard.
Step 7 – Measure and cut 142, 6-inch lengths of yarn. These are ties. Set aside.
Step 8 – Make two ears. Place one 6-inch length of yarn across the 2 ½-inch width of the cardboard rectangle. Wrap the 4-ply yarn around the 4-inch length of the cardboard 20 times. Slide the 6-inch length of yarn to one 2 ½-inch edge. Double knot the 6-inch length of yarn around the bundle tightly. Slide the yarn bundle from the cardboard. Repeat the process one more time to create two ears. Set the two ear bundles aside.
Step 9 – Make 140 bundles of yarn 2 ½-inch long. Follow the process in Step 6 but wrap the yarn around the 2 ½-inch width of the cardboard. Tie securely to create the body bundles. Set aside.
Step 10 – Tie eight body bundles to the head portion of the poodle with a double or triple knot. Slide six of the bundles around the front and bottom of the head. Tie the two ears to the head. Shake the bundles to create a fluffy head.
Step 11 – Tie 132 bundles of yarn around the long loop to create the body, legs and tail. Slide the bundles along the wire as needed.
Step 12 – Draw and cut a teardrop shape from the red felt that is 1 ½-inch long and ¾-inch wide at the widest area. Glue the teardrop to the front of the poodle in the position of the mouth.
Step 13 – Glue the eyes in the desired position.
Step 14 – Tie a bow around the yarn poodle’s neck with the ¾-inch ribbon.
Step 15 – Trim visible ties so they are even with the curly yarn head and body.
Add bells to the neck ribbon as added embellishment. Place the completed poodle on your bed, shelf or take her with you as a companion in the car.
