It is quite common for celebrities to give their off springs unusual names such as Pilot Inspector (Poor Kid) and Apple (which isn’t that bad compared to the other). Lately oridinary people have started taking a page out of their book when it comes to naming their off springs and I have a suspicion as to why.
Every three seconds, in the U.S., a child is born. Most of them are giving common names such as Laura or Samuel but the ones giving unusual names generate media attention while the others only gain the attention of family members and friends of the family and the occasionally birth announcement in their local newspaper. Was that the reason for the choice of a name for the Jameson newborn, that unusual names gain more attention?
This past Saturday, on the 24th of November, the Jameson welcomed a baby girl into their family at 10PM. She weighed 8lbs. They decided to name her Hashtag Jameson. The mother posted a birth announcement via facebook the next day with a photo: “Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last night. She weys 8pounds and I luv her so much!!!!!!” It’s a wonder she didn’t chose to make this announcement on twitter because you can bet many people will wonder if she spent her entire pregnancy struggling with a twitter addiction.
People Magazine conducted a survey “What do you think of the name Hashtag?” along with their article about the baby’s birth, and 99% answered “#Foolish” while 1% answered “#Fun.” I am extremely concerned about the 1%. Someone using the handle “Mingo’ commented on that article and survey with: “I’m betting that these new parents are not over 20 years old and most likely don’t have a high school diploma.” I wouldn’t doubt if that was true and this comment reminds me of the attention seekers who make up MTV’s Teen Mom reality show.
Imagine what will happen when little Hashtag Jameson starts school. With a name like ‘Hashtag,’ she is surely to attract the unwanted attention of bullies. And for her own sake, I hope she never creates a twitter account as her own because as someone with the handle SinclairSam06wrote on mashable with his/her own hashtag : “#YourparentsHateYou” will be similar to the techniques her cyber bullies will use in her future. CatchMarketing also wrote underneath SinclairSam06 : “OMG. This is the secret to ruining a Baby’s life…” True. Poor kid. She doesn’t stand a chance.
You would think parents would be more considerate of what they name their children considering that the child will have to live with that name until age 18 when they can legally change it to what they want themselves but some parents only care about getting media attention that may generate into a reality show of their own and plenty of money.
What’s next with naming? If twitter addicts name their child Twitter or Hashtag, facebook goes with Facebook, then I shudder to think what type of name regular marijuana users (whether medicinal or recreational) would come up with for their children?
