JAMcLynne’s 2012 NFL Power Rankings for Week 1

by pop tug

The National Football League is set to kick off the 2012 season. Fantasy football leagues and football pools are starting to kick into high gear. The opening week of JAMcLynne’s NFL Power Rankings have been release and they place the Green Bay Packers at the top with 133.7 points. This year I chose to take some statistical numbers from the preseason, and include them in the mix of equations that I use to come up with the power rankings.

The ratings are primarily based on past team performance and some individual statistics that are massaged by a computer program. If the program likes what it sees, it will rank a team at the top of the list. Otherwise, bad performing teams will be sent to the bottom of the rankings. These numbers are produced purely for fun, and it is not recommend they be used for any sort of gambling.

I hope to be releasing these new power rankings each and every week for the upcoming season and we will see which team ends up at top.

Here are JAMcLynne’s game picks for scheduled games week 1 of the NFL 2012 season:
The winner is marked by bold lettering.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012:
Dallas Cowboys 102.88 at New York Giants 115.28
Dallas Cowboy DeMarcus Ware has been talking up a storm before the NFL’s opening night to the 2012 season. But he will likely be walking out of Giants Stadium with a bruised ego if the Giants play mistake free football during Wednesday’s NFL opener. Look for the Giants to come away with a victory.

Sunday, September 9, 2012:
Indianapolis Colts 88.69 at Chicago Bears 108.69
The Colts attempt to bounce back from a dismal 2011 season. Andrew Luck’s preseason performance has given the Colts a bounce in week one’s NFL power rankings. Time will tell whether the Colts will be able to hang on.

Philadelphia Eagles 117.43 at Cleveland Browns 84.24
The Eagles want to come out of the gate running with Michael Vick at the helm of a new team for the new season. The Eagles finished 8-8 last year, and if that performance is repeated again for the 2012 season, there just may be a whole new cast of characters for next year.

New England Patriots 117.66 at Tennessee Titans 111.92
During the preseason, the Patriots and the Titans had opposite records with the Pats on the losing end. This may be why the power rankings has this game quite close. The computer still thinks the Patriots win.

Atlanta Falcons 107.48 at Kansas City Chiefs 92.91
The Falcons are shaping up to be one of the better teams in the 2013 season. After a few games are under their belt, I am guessing they will be making a move up the power rankings. Matt Ryan came away with the highest QB rating in preseason. The Falcons should start there climb with a win against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jacksonville Jaguars 92.16 at Minnesota Vikings 83.15
I was a little surprised the Jags where picked in this one. The Vikings usually play well at home.

Washington Redskins 98.55 at New Orleans Saints 124.53
The Redskins are a team that seems to be perpetually searching for a quarterback. Rex Grossman is not the guy this year. Robert Griffen III? Kirk Cousins, who lead all passing yards in preseason? Probably none of these.

Buffalo Bills 81.1 at New York Jets 88.53
This game will be a battle for the bottom of the standings. Will Tebow replace Sanchez in Week 6? Probably.

St. Louis Rams 82.98 at Detroit Lions 119.54
The Lions get the edge playing at home, coming off a decent season. The Rams will be searching hard for wins the rest of the way out.

Miami Dolphins 75.44 at Houston Texans 121.35
The Dolphins are a mess personnel wise, and their numbers show it. They find themselves at the bottom of JAMcLynne’s NFL Power Rankings for week one. Texans win.

San Francisco 49ers 124.23 at Green Bay Packers 133.7
A close game is figured for the 49ers and Packers. Give the slight edge at home to the Packers. However, Randy Moss has been listed as a starter by the 49ers. Could he tip the scales in the 49ers favor?

Seattle Seahawks 111.91 at Arizona Cardinals 102.7
The Seahawks saw a nice bump in their power rankings due to a strong preseason. Arizona just may have a tougher time then they expected.

Carolina Panthers 87.88 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers 78.27
meh… These two teams will wallow near the bottom of the rankings for most of the season. This may be one of two or three Carolina wins this year?

Pittsburgh Steelers 129.98 at Denver Broncos 109.54
I think this is one of the more interesting games of the week. Manning vs. Roethlisberger. A classic NFL matchup that will likely be close. Manning just may pull a win out of his hat.

Monday, September 10, 2012:
Cincinnati Bengals 101.39 at Baltimore Ravens 123.74
The Bengals has shown slow and steady improvement over the past few seasons. This game will be a close one. The Ravens should eek out a win at home.

San Diego Chargers 100.02 at Oakland Raiders 95.55
Two West Coast teams will fight out a close one. The Raiders may have some bloated rankings and may cruise downward as the season progresses.
