Jewel’s Deluxe Restaurant is often called “The small place with big taste,” and “The hidden jewel of the south.” Located on the Public Square in Darlington, South Carolina, Jewel’s has rightfully earned its nicknames, because it is one of the best kept secrets in town for great food and homemade desserts at an inexpensive price.
At first glance, “Jewel’s may look like your ordinary small town – across the street – type of diner. But, the food is anything but same old, same old.” The dining room is cozy with an at home feel, and the tables are well decorated to create a relaxing atmosphere for customers to enjoy a nice meal. The friendly staff gives exceptional customer service, and the lunch menu is very affordable with a variety of items to choose from.
For years, the great food served at Jewel’s has summoned local residents to its doors for the opportunity to get a taste of what many call, “The best home-style cooked food in South Carolina.” While Jewel’s is only open for business during lunch hours, they draw several hundred diners each day. Whenever I go there to eat, whether they are just opening for the day or near closing time, it’s usually busy the entire time, but the wait time is never very long.
Ordering your food is never a hassle. “One tradition that Jewel’s continues to practice, is their decades old custom of providing a pencil and notepad at each table for customers to write their menu selections.” Once you’ve been seated by the friendly staff, you can write your order on the notepad, and within minutes you’re ready to eat. If you arrive with a big appetite, I highly recommend ordering a bowl of Jewel’s delicious vegetable soup. The soup is made with a freshly cut blend of vegetables and a hint of flavor from a ham bone. The soup is so good that it’s sure to make you smile.
Jewel’s Southern Cuisine and Menu
For just under $10, you get a full course meal – 1 meat and 3 side items – with dessert, and a choice of lemonade, sweet or unsweetened iced tea, a soft drink or a glass of ice water. All the menu items are great. The local favorite, however, is the baked rice and gravy. People often come to Jewel’s just to get a take-out order of baked rice for later, to eat with dinner.

- · Baked/broiled Chicken
- · Hash brown casserole
- · Baked spaghetti
