If you’re a fan of science fiction films, chances are you also read comic books. Many people will leave the theater after seeing “John Carter” hungry for more adventures from this interplanetary hero. Everybody knows the movie is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’s series of novels. However, some people aren’t inclined to read books, preferring a more visual style. Thanks to Marvel Comics, you can fulfill your need for more adventures on the red planet by picking up the “John Carter, Warlord of Mars Omnibus.”
This hardcover book collects issues #1 through #28 and Annuals #1 through #3 of the acclaimed series. Inside the pages you’ll read the continuing exploits of Carter as he is joined in battle by his love Dejah Thoris. Together they confront the beasts and creatures of Mars (or Barsoom, as the inhabitants of the planet call it).
The series originally ran from 1977 to 1979. It was created by writer Marv Wolfman (“Blade” creator) and penciler Gil Kane (“Green Lantern”). Peter Gillis (“Strikeforce: Morituri”) wrote for the series as well. Pencilers Carmine Infantino (“Flash”) and Larry Hama (“G. I. Joe: A Real American Hero”) also contributed to the art.
The “John Carter, Warlord of Mars” comic series took place between paragraphs three and four of chapter 27 in Burroughs’s novel “A Princess of Mars.” It won an Eagle Award for “Favorite New Title” in 1978.
Consumer response to the collection is very positive. Aaron Stack stated, “Marvel strikes gold again with this Omnibus! The construction of the book itself is top quality. No gutter loss and it lays as flat as you would like.”
W. R. Jones declared, “If you’re a fan of John Carter you’ll want this beautiful book, if you enjoy movie tie-in stuff this book is a great item to stick on the coffee table for friends to browse … or stick one in the closet for a sweet collectible.” Apollo R. remarked, “Do yourself a favor and purchase this fantastic, classic comic-book series. Great writers, great artists, and solid entertainment.”
The “John Carter, Warlord of Mars Omnibus” is hardcover and 632 pages long. The cover of the book is the art from the first issue of the series by Gil Kane. It retails for around $65.00 to $100.00.
