“Parenthood” is one of the few television dramas that real parents can relate to. From sibling rivalry to teenage sex, these moms have dealt with it all. 2012 was a particularly poignant year for the “Parenthood” moms. While their trials were different in nature, Julia Braverman-Graham, Kristina and Sarah Braverman all needed some shoulders to cry on.
Single mom Sarah Braverman (played by Lauren Graham) always seems to be going through a trial. Since getting engaged to much younger Mark Cyr (Jason Ritter), viewers knew the relationship wasn’t going to last. Sarah has been working for Hank (Ray Romano), a photographer, and the two have had moments of chemistry. After Sarah chooses work over a romantic weekend with Mark, drama ensues. Sarah knows she made a mistake and calls Mark to apologize. However, when Mark comes to surprise Sarah, he sees his fiancée drunk and draped on Hank. It’s not any surprise when he breaks up with Sarah. Sarah is disappointed but it doesn’t take long for her to jump into Hank’s arms. The mom of two isn’t any stranger to drama-filled relationships and it’s likely Sarah and Hank will clash in 2013.
Like any parent, the “Parenthood” moms have had plenty of conflict with their children. Sarah’s son Drew is having sex with his girlfriend. Kristina’s son Max Braverman is often a handful. Yet, it was Julia Braverman-Graham (Erika Christensen) who has made the most parenting adjustments this year. The working mom was having a hard time balancing work and family. So, she quit her job as a lawyer. However, she has also had a hard time adjusting to being a stay at home mom. With the adoption of Victor (Xolo Mariduena), Julia and her husband Joel have had to deal with jealousy from their younger daughter Sydney. Of course, Julia also struggled with motivating Victor to do his schoolwork and simply forming a close bond with him. Julia is determined to make everything work out and but this doesn’t mean there won’t be more problems for her to solve in the near future.
Perhaps, the toughest part of the season has been watching Kristina’s battle with breast cancer. After finding out she had cancer, Kristina (Monica Potter) has a lumpectomy. While the surgery is successful, the cancer has spread and Kristina starts chemotherapy. The procedure makes her sick. Then, on Christmas Eve, Kristina has an infection that lands her in the hospital. While things look bad for a while, eventually the mom of three turns a corner and she is able to be with her family on Christmas. Kristina Braverman is a great mom who puts her family first. If she dies, the show really wouldn’t be the same. It’s likely her cancer will be a big part of the storyline in 2013.
These women are strong moms. Despite having different trials in their lives, they have at least one thing in common: a loving, supportive family. Thus, perhaps things will be looking up for the Braverman girls. Yet, don’t expect life to be easy for these moms in 2013.
