Using craft and diy supplies in a new way is one of the things that makes designing projects so exciting to me. That is the way I felt when I found some jute upholstery webbing in my craft stash. The red-stripe webbing was perfect for a homespun heart pocket for Valentine ‘s Day. Filled with a small bouquet of flowers, yummy chocolates, or something small and shiny , the pocket can be used for decorating or gift-giving.
Things You Will Need:
3 1/2-inch-wide red-stripe jute webbing
Ruler
Scissors
Straight pins
Sewing machine
Red thread
Lace trim
2 flat buttons -red, white or brown
Hand sewing needle
Step 1
Cut four 7-inch-long strips from 3 1/2-inch-wide red-stripe jute upholstery webbing.
Step 2
Round the corners on one short end of one strip. Using this strip as your guide, place it on top of the remaining strips and cut identical curved ends on one short end.
Step 3
Lay one strip vertical o n your work surface with the curved end pointing up. Place ano ther strip horizontal over the vertical strip. Match each short edge with a long edge. The two strips will form a heart-shape. Pin the pieces together. Repeat with the remaining two strips.
Step 4
Set you sewing machine to a long straight stitch and thread your machine with red thread. Starting from the long edge of the vertical strip, t op stitch along the top edge of the horizontal strip, as close to the edge as possible . Stop at the center of the short curved end. Flip the shape over and repeat the stitching on the mirrored edge. This has connected the two strips together and created a top stitching on the inside edges of the heart-shape. Repeat th is process on the remaining two strips.
Step 5
Cut a 12 – inch -long strip of lace trim. My trim was 1 -inch-wide, but any width you prefer could be used. Lay one heart-shape on your work surface. Place the remaining heart on top. Insert one end of the lace between the layers at the top, center of each heart bump. Pin through the layers to secure the lace. Continue to pin the hearts together. Stitch as close to the edge as possible from one handle, around the outside edge of the heart, to the re m aining handle. Do not sew between the handles, or inside the heart valley. You now have a jute heart pocket.
Step 6
Choose two flat red, white or brown buttons from your button collect ion. Determine which side will be the front of your pocket. Hand stitch one button to the heart front at the base of each handle end.
For an a dditional Valentine’s Day embellishment, you could stamp or stencil a red h eart in the square section above the point.
