Will it be a Robsten reunion?
That’s the big question for “Twilight” fans, as former lovebirds Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are slated to appear at the 2012 “MTV Video Music Awards” on September 6 in the aftermath of Stewart’s fling with director Rupert Sanders.
While the stars were originally scheduled to present at the VMA’s together, an MTV show source told the Daily Mirror: “This event could be a real embarrassment…If they go up on stage at the same time fans will believe they are united again. If Kristen goes up alone the crowd reaction will be astonishing. Fans have bought into the romance on and off screen so she could be in for a horrible night.”
And while a reunion between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson would be must-see TV, it’s not the first time an awards show has been the setting for an awkward pairing.
Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley – MTV Video Music Awards (1994)
Sure, they were husband and wife. But when Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley took the stage at the “MTV Video Music Awards” in 1994, it resulted in one of the strangest moments in awards show history. Jackson famously announced “And just think, nobody thought this would last,” before planting a painfully staged kiss on Lisa Marie’s lips. Even she looked confused!
Taylor Swift and Kanye West – MTV Video Music Awards (2009)
They weren’t supposed to appear together, but when Kanye West suddenly crashed the stage during Taylor Swift’s 2009 VMA acceptance speech it caused a major backlash. West famously jumped up on the stage and interrupted Swift’s Best Female Video speech, declaring, “I’m sorry, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” The stunned audience went silent and the rapper spent the next year apologizing for the incident.
Angelina Jolie and James Haven – 72ndAcademy Awards (2000)
Long before Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie swapped spit – with her brother! At the 2000 Oscars, the “Girls Interrupted” award winner kissed her brother on the lips and gushed that she was “so in love” with him. But in 2004, Jolie told People: “It wasn’t some odd open-mouthed kiss. It was disappointing that something so beautiful and pure could be turned into a circus. “
Martha Stewart and Busta Rhymes – MTV Video Music Awards (1997)
Before their convictions, Martha Stewart and Busta Rhymes were just two polar opposites thrust together on MTV’s stage. The duo’s 1997 appearance on the “MTV Video Music Awards” had host Chris Rock saying: “One knows how to make a really mean pot roast and one’s always roasted on pot.” But the highlight of the night was Busta teaching the domestic diva how to dilly-o.
Elton John and Eminem – 43rd Grammy Awards (2001)
Talk about an odd couple! After Eminem got flack for his homophobic song lyrics, he appeared with Elton John at the 2001 Grammy Awards for a duet of the song “Stan.” The rapper told MTV News: “I was like, ‘The only way I’ll perform at the Grammys is with Elton John.’ And I was saying it in kind of jest, thinking it would never happen. The idea of it started becoming more, ‘OK, this is a way to really flip it around and really f— people’s heads up.” But Eminem also added he didn’t even know that John was gay: “I didn’t know anything about his personal life. I didn’t really care. But being that he was gay and he had my back, I think it made a statement in itself saying that he understood where I was coming from.” Now if we can just get Sir Elton to duet with Madonna!
