Do you have a sense of adventure, are you fascinated by space, and do you enjoy really really long road trips? Well then pack your bags because here is a trip just for you! Mars-One, a non-for-profit organization, wants to send you to Mars. They plan to have a colony of 30 people living and working on Mars by 2033. Yes you heard right, humans are going to Mars. According to Mars-One, humans will be landing on Mars in the year 2023 with 2 additional people joining the colony each year.
So how is this possible?
This mission is possible because Mars-One is making use of already existing technology. They have also simplified conventional plans that were used by NASA during the moon missions. Instead of trying to figure out a safe way to return humans back to Earth, causing the mission to be much more complex, that step has simply been omitted. The Mars-One mission is one of exploration and it is also a mission of settlement. The Mars-One astronauts will expect to live and work on Mars for the rest of their lives. Currently, there are no plans of having a return trip back to Earth.
Mars One has met with and discussed their plans with several of the leading aerospace companies from around the world. They have been able to find at least one supplier for every piece of hardware they need for their missions. Just last month Mars One team members Bas Lansdorp and Norbert Kraft traveled to the United States, where they visited several potential suppliers. During their visit they went to Space X where they discussed the possibility of a launch in 2016 and what sort of timeline and financial requirements would be needed.
Who is paying for this?
Until recently, anyone wanting to go into space would have to find a way to go with the aid of a government space agency. This is no longer the case thanks in part to lowering costs and increased technology. Mars-One expects to fund their mission by using the large international attention their mission will receive to their advantage. They will turn their mission into one of the largest watched Reality TV shows in history. People will tune in worldwide to see the astronauts prepare and train, to see the first launch to Mars, the first human landing on Mars, and so much more. Mars-One is also accepting donations and seeking sponsors from corporations. Please visit the Mars-One website for more information on how to donate or become a sponsor.
How do I sign up?
According to the Mars-One website, the astronaut selection process will begin later this year. Mars-one plans on having 40 astronauts trained at any time during their missions. A replica of the Mars settlement will be built on Earth in order to train the astronauts. “The astronaut selection and the preparations in the simulated Mars base will be broadcast world-wide for the public to view.” Mars-One is not restricting their astronauts be from any particular country of origin nor have any particular prior education. According to a press release, “Mars One is opening the astronaut program to anyone on planet Earth that meets the base criteria”. A full list of basic requirements is listed on the Mars-One website.
