Representative Michelle Bachmann, along with fellow Republican lawmakers Louie Gohmert, Trent Franks, Thomas Rooney and Lynn Westmoreland have the nation’s founders rolling over in their graves about now. In a country of ever growing ideological and cultural diversity, this Ultra-Conservative rogue faction has sunk to an all-time low, in the wake of its most recently publicity stunt.
A Tea Party Witch-Hunt
Known for her outspoken ideological bias, historical ignorance and general intolerance, Bachmann has taken one step further toward overt racism with her recent attack on Huma Abedin, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff and a proud Muslim-American woman. Abedin is also the wife of former Representative Anthony Weiner of New York, who himself is Jewish by religious affiliation.
Without any relevant, factual evidence to back up her claim, Representative Bachmann accused Abedin of being affiliated with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood–known terrorist organizations in the Middle East.
On Glenn Beck’s radio program, she further defended her attack on Abedin by saying, “If my family members were associated with Hamas, a terrorist organization, that alone could be sufficient to disqualify me from getting a security clearance,” Bachmann said, according to a transcript of her remarks. “So all we did is ask, did the federal government look into her family associations before she got a high level security clearance.”
Just to clarify, if the federal government hadn’t investigated Abedin’s background, she never would have gotten her job in the first place; as extensive background security checks are considered standard protocol for all citizenry in such lofty positions. What Representative Bachmann and her counterparts have done is simply reinforce the reality that citizenship in the United States is still a very ‘us versus them’ perceptual viewpoint.
The USA is Us and Them
The ‘us versus them’ perceptual viewpoint espouses citizenship as directly related to the practice and purportion of Anglo-Saxon Protestant based cultural values and norms. In the end, just paying one’s taxes whilst contributing to the wonderful plurality comprising the United States of America, the ultimate altar of human camaraderie on the planet, is not enough. Not without someone also physically looking like, reading the same ideological literature and representing the same religious perceptual viewpoints as the dominant White Anglo-Saxon Protestant cultural status quo.
This perceptual bias is what makes it so difficult for many Conservatives like Bachmann to co-exist with other cultures, ethnicities, ideologies and lifestyles. This includes Gay and Lesbian American citizens, as well as Islamic ones like Abedin. To Bachmann, American means Anglican-Christian, without any exception.
However, Representative Bachmann is best advised to read up a bit more on America’s founding before continuing her ad nausea rants and raves–in which Jews, Muslims, diverse Native American and even Black African cultures took part in varying degrees either willingly or not; as have many other peoples’ before and since.
It’s not Entirely a Partisan Problem
It must be noted here that Representative Bachmann and her contemporaries have been sternly denounced by prominent Republicans including Speaker of the House John Boehner and Senator John McCain; with both legislators quick to chastise the overt racism and intolerance being espoused by this rogue faction.
Senator McCain specifically said in response that Abedin is, “An intelligent, upstanding, hard-working, and loyal servant of our country and our government, who has devoted countless days of her life to advancing the ideals of the nation she loves and looking after its most precious interests.”
Senator McCain, Speaker Boehner and their fellow more rational and compassionate Conservative counterparts should be applauded for their quick rebuttal of Representative Bachmann and company’s horribly inappropriate and insensitive, not to mention inflammatory remarks. However, actions taken against her and the other four lawmakers responsible should not end there.
Shape Up or Ship Out
Senator Joseph McCarthy was censured by Congress as a Karmatic result of his compulsive bullying of innocent American citizenry during the Communist ‘Red Scare’ over 50 years ago now. Representative Bachmann and those responsible for this most recent heinous accusation should be treated the same–and for the good of the United States, willingly vacate their posts as representatives of a pluralistic nation and its diverse citizenry.
There is no room in a participatory democracy for extremist, tyrannical attacks towards those who do not look, act and think like the dominant cultural majority. Furthermore, the continued presence of Representative Bachmann and her four cohorts in the highest reaches of government is much more dangerous for America’s future than healthcare legislation, the federal deficit or any potential, external terrorist threat.
