After a week off due to the Presidential debate, “Modern Family” was back with a special gift for fans. There were two new episodes on October 10, meaning that everyone got twice the laughs. The two episodes featured a lot of stories about change. The three families are all going through some major life events, and they are starting to face them now. Here is a recap of the latest episodes of “Modern Family.”
Recap of “Schooled”
In the first episode of the evening, the Dunphy family is preparing to send Haley off to college. It’s an emotional experience for them, with Phil going so far as to make a fancy book of his famous life lessons. Claire’s preparation is a little more practical, as she buys Haley a box of condoms to take with her. When Haley and her parents reach the dorm room, disaster ensues. First, Phil accidentally gropes Haley’s roommate after mistaking her for Claire. Then, Claire accidentally places My Little Pony sheets on Haley’s bed. Lastly, the box of condoms spills all over the floor, sufficiently humiliating Haley. Anxious to get started with the college experience, she asks her parents to leave immediately. However, a sweet moment follows later in the episode when it’s clear that Haley misses them. She calls her parents and thanks them for everything, including her dad’s book. She is also wearing a goofy shirt that Phil made to celebrate the college departure.
Haley wasn’t the only family member starting school. When Lily starts kindergarten, she is immediately met by a bully named Connor. Cameron takes matters into his own hands, grabbing the child and threatening him. That leads the principal to invite Connor’s parents in for a meeting, and they happen to be lesbians. In an effort to fix the situation, a play date is set up. However, Cameron can’t seem to get along with one of Connor’s moms, and they agree to part ways. As they are about to leave, they discover that Lily and Connor have locked themselves in the bedroom. They want to be friends, and that forces the parents to put their differences aside.
The last storyline involved Jay and Gloria. Under Manny’s insistence, the two attend a baby class. Since they are both experienced parents, they mostly look at the class as a joke. Things get so bad that they end up ditching early. Manny is upset with them, but Jay reassures him by saying he will always be there. He says that Manny only has to worry about being a kid.
Recap of “Snip”
The main story of the second episode involves Phil getting a vasectomy. He and Claire have a five-year plan. Once Luke goes to college in five years, they will be able to enjoy their freedom. Of course, getting a vasectomy is a big deal and Phil is terrified. When he sees a patient hobbling out of the room, he decides to run away. It takes comforting words from Jay to face his fears. However, Claire arrives just before the operation and stops him. She isn’t as ready as she thinks to give up on having kids, and that happens despite a rough day in which all three of her kids get on her last nerve. But after overhearing a sweet conversation between Haley and Alex, and receiving a rose from Luke, she decides that she is still open to the future. Together, they decide to skip the surgery for now.
Meanwhile, Mitchell is trying to get Cameron to go back to work. With Lily in school, Cameron has a lot of free time. He’s even working on a master project, which is later revealed to be a mermaid costume for a cop. Mitchell wants him to fill it with a job, but knows that work is a sensitive topic. He enlists one of his friends to trick Cameron into taking a job, which works until Cameron overhears details of the plot. Despite being angry, he breaks down in tears when he realizes he does need something more to do. He decides to take a job as Manny’s music teacher.
The final story involves Jay and Gloria’s dispute over the baby’s gender. Jay wants to know, and Gloria wants to be surprised. That leads to a feud between the two, but bigger things are going on. Jay is terrified at the prospect of having a daughter. He feels like he messed up with Claire, and won’t have the time to make up for it this time. Phil manages to calm him down, but Jay still wants a boy. Meanwhile, Gloria is refusing to acknowledge that she looks pregnant. She refuses to wear maternity clothes, and snaps at Manny when he tries to talk to her about it. Eventually, some warm words from her son, and some ripped clothes, force Gloria to come to her senses.
