Ancient Rome is a civilization that still continues to make an impact on society even in modern times. While many may wonder how this could be all we need to do is take a look around. You might be surprised to know that there are many things we use today that were actually invented by the Ancient Romans.
Do you ever think that shorthand is something that is a recent practice? Guess again. The Ancient Romans are the ones who came up with an official shorthand system. Shorthand is basically a way in which you can write quicker by using symbols and letters rather than writing everything out completely. Marcus Tullius Tiro was a member of Cicero’s household and is the inventor of Notae Tironianae, which is the first Latin shorthand system.
Are you thankful for flushing toilets? We have Ancient Romans to thank for them. They were the ones who devised the flushing system and installed over one hundred of these toilets in various public places such as gymnasiums. With the Roman design the waste was washed away with water into sewer systems. In modern times our toilets have a more sophisticated system to remove the waste, but let’s give the Roman’s some recognition for a very worthwhile invention.
How often do you use scissors? Did you know that bladed scissors could also be attributed to the Ancient Romans? Around the year 100 A.D. primarily clothing makers and barbers used them. They were not widely popular at the time for other uses but I am glad that the Ancient Romans came up with the idea. Kindergarten just would not be the same without them.
As Ancient Rome became more populated there became the need for a housing solution that could accommodate the increase in people. Soon apartment blocks were designed that housed six to eight apartments. This eventually become the most common form of housing in the Ancient Roman era. Apartments of various styles are very much in use today especially in large cities and even in less populated areas. It is a great use of land and makes sense since apartments can hold many people in a small area of land.
Did you know that the United States weren’t the only ones who take a census? During the Roman Empire, a census was taken for tax purposes. This is even noted in the Bible in the Gospel of Luke. Today a census is taken every ten years in the United States and asks many more questions than the census taken back in Ancient Rome. This is a great tool for genealogists who want to research their family history.
The Ancient Romans were a society that put a lot of thought into the world around them. They came up with many simple solutions to typical life problems that are still in use today. Without things like flushing toilets, scissors, census taking, and ideas like how to house many people in a small area our lives may look very different than it does today. The Ancient Romans not only made an impact for their society but for all societies after them.
