Greek mythos takes a sideline to the story behind this new attempt at putting a little flair to the age old story of Zeus, Theseus and other Greeks of old.

The film Immortals may be the same genre of film as 300 and by the same producers but is far from the same quality of film as well as far from common Greek Mythology. Immortals is a different take on the mythos of Theseus and the gods of Greek myth including Theseus as the hero.
Theseus according to the mythos of Greek legend was a hero that fought monsters then became King of Athens but the myth and old legends take a little beating in this retelling. Myths of Theseus tell of him going to six entrances of the underworld and fighting a monster with the Minotaur being the most notable.
Before man the immortals fight each other with the winners becoming Gods while the defeated are imprisoned in a cage under a mountain and called the Titans. Zeus rules the Gods and tells them not to interfere with mortals while the defeated can only be released by the Epirus Bow which was lost during the battle.
Hyperion is looking to take revenge on the Gods when he asks for their help to save his family when they get sick but they die so Hyperion searches the world looking for the bow. Hyperion wants to release the Titans to battle the gods again, Theseus tries to stop him from releasing the Titans but is not able to.
Theseus tries to stop Hyperion along with a few others including a virgin oracle named Phaedra who knows the location of the bow. Hyperion does release the Titans who fights with the gods and kills all but Zeus who tears down the mountain above the cage where they are fighting to once again bury them underground.
One of the popular myths behind Theseus that is in Immortals has Theseus killing a bull headed freak of nature created by Hyperion. The whole film changes the myths of Greek legend but the film is dark to begin with and by dark I do not mean grim or depressing.
The film is dark with many scenes almost indistinct so you can’t really see what is going on which I think is more a problem with filming than the Blu-ray transfer. Others have noted that the film is dark and brooding but when a filmmaker strays from the popular myth and you are trying to see things clearly the film falls short.
I had a hard time with following what was going on and only an occasional pause to check the internet to see what was going on did I stay on track. The video is dark but has a surreal look to it as well in some scenes, especially when seeing the gods and the fight scene between them and the Titans.
Other aspects of video are just fine and color is exceptionally good when the scene is not too dark, the style used for the general look of the film is good for the most part. Audio is well done with a great DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound track that is fantastic on a surround sound system.
Bonus features like the It’s No Myth and Immortals: Gods and Heroes goes into the more authentic myths behind the film but these are too quick a look. The main extra is a twenty minute behind the scenes look but this is mirrored with the same amount of footage not used in the film with deleted and alternate scenes.
Extras are not really worth much other than the one making of feature which does a good job at the behind the scenes stuff but that’s the only piece worth looking at more than once. Immortals is not really a film that is on par or even close to 300 as the trailers like to point out even though it is by the same producers.
I don’t mind a storyline with a lot of behind the scenes events or a narrative once in a while to help fill in the holes of a plot but this is bad. I had a hard time following the movie and the rest of the audience, my wife and son, also could not follow the film all that much.
Immortals is just not that great a film and one that could have done much better if it had towed the Greek mythos line to keep the action movie in the right direction. Skip Immortals as a purchase but a rental is worth it for the fight scene between Greek gods and Titans.
