Mekka Don, born Chukwuemeka Nnamdi Onyejeke is an American rapper, actor lawyer, and entrepreneur, dropped his newest EP today entitled “Paradise,” presented by DJ EV.
This year, Mekka Don was named an “mtvU Freshman” and won “mtvU Best Freshman Video” for his music video “Dirty” in March of this year. Additionally, Mekka Don has been featured on MTV, VH1.com, ESPN, Bossip and several other media outlets including the Law Blog “Above the Law” following a feature on him that appeared in the ABA Journal regarding him abandoning his law practice to grow his music career. Mekka’s decision also brought him to the attention of the hip hop magazine XXL.
“Paradise” is an EP that brings an entire range of sound and emotion in just 5 songs. Production on this project provides a solid music bed for the lyrical deadly delivery by Mekka. Instrumentation was carefully laid out very naturally and did not overwhelm the vocals. Mekka rode the tracks like a true veteran and meshes so well with the tracks that you might think his voice was perfectly manufactured by the engineer. However, I have spoken to this artist and nothing about this project is artificial in any way. He’s the real deal!
I particularly liked the wild side of track 2, “Heads Will Roll” as Mekka co-mingles his slow/fast style with some dead-stop bass points in the track…this song is fun to listen to and kept my head bobbing.
Track 5, “Tired of Waiting” is a deep story of rags to riches, hard work, dedication and intestinal fortitude. The chorus, we can’t call it a hook, is fully orchestrated and the message is presented in a heartfelt manner, about someone who has put in the legwork and is ready to reap the rewards of their efforts.
Overall, I appreciated the musicality of the project, but that is not what really drove me to do this review. In all five songs, I did not hear one word glorifying drug use, sales nor the denigration of women on any level. I totally agree with the New York Daily story which stated they believe Mekka Don is “bringing a change to rap.”
4/5 – Project is well done, the message is clean and clear and the artist has a strong voice which as used in this EP, helps the music instead of the other way around. The engineer and mixer did their job well in not overwhelming the artist’s voice. The project got only 4/5 because … well, nobody’s perfect! But I added “Paradise” to my playlist.
