Dallas Cowboys (3-4) at Atlanta Falcons (7-0); Line: Falcons by 3 1/2
The Cowboys need to make a statement. They had a chance to do that last week against the New York Giants. But the Cowboys got off to a horrid start and could not recover. Beating the undefeated Falcons this week will not be easy. On paper, the Cowboys pass for more yards per game than the Falcons do. The Cowboys also give up less passing yards per game. But the Falcons are clearly better in one glaring statistic: 7 wins, 0 losses.
The Cowboys desperately need this win to keep pace in the NFC East Division. This will be their motivation in the game. Handing the undefeated Falcons their first loss would give the Cowboys a boost. The Cowboys will need to protect the football. Quarterback Tony Romo is having a rough season so far. He leads the league with 13 interceptions, including four last week against the Giants. The Cowboys’ defense has played well this season, but no team can overcome that many turnovers in a game. DeMarco Murray is still out with a sprained foot, so it will be up to Romo to win this game. He will need to avoid interceptions to give his team a chance to win. Romo will also have to outplay Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.
The Falcons just need to play their game. They are a balanced team with a very good quarterback. Ryan has the third-best quarterback rating in the NFL. The Falcons are playing great football, and they are at home. The problem with the Falcons is their soft schedule. The best team that they have beaten is the Denver Broncos (4-3). You have to wonder if the Falcons are as good as their undefeated record. They will try to prove that today.
When I first saw this line, I immediately thought that it was too low. As much as I want the Cowboys to win, I just don’t think Romo will play well enough for that to happen. Romo has been disappointing this season. Putting him up against the undefeated Falcons is no cure for that. Take the Falcons and lay the points. Pick: Falcons -3 1/2. Falcons 30, Cowboys 24.
