The too much soda, too big soda debate continues. In New York City this week, Mayor Bloomberg’s health board upped the ante – or is that lowered the snack bounty? NYC’s Board Of Health now may curb city patrons of eating popcorn and milkshakes. Here’s how a NYC Board of Health member put it, “Popcorn isn’t a whole lot better from the nutritional point of view than soda is, and may have even more calories,” said Dr. Bruce Vladeck. Are potato chips and Goobers next? Maybe they’ll target pizza or chicken fingers too.
Actually, it’s not about soda. As much as this fat obsessed, flawed nutritional argument weakly aspires to twisting it into, it fails the argument. It’s about making sense. It’s not about rights, nor about politics. It’s not about mega corporations poisoning us – nor about smoking. It’s about elected officials making sense. It’s about a mayor not wasting our time with pretzel illogical legislation. If this ‘soda size ban’ made any sense, people might respond favorably – but alas, it doesn’t.
Common Sense VS Pretzel Logic
All with an iota of common sense know fully soda and smoking isn’t necessary for a healthy life. Of course, smoking not only impacts health – for all who inhale – but it’s a nuisance. Last time I checked, the fat guy next to me sucking down a Sprite wasn’t poisoning my air – if you don’t count big, juicy farts. Bottom line: Health impact matters to a public square, but if Soda Nazi Bloomberg & his dim wattage stormtrooopers were to be believed, soda is as evil as, well, booze. Yes, booze. Something Mr. Bloomberg doesn’t touch. Bars and liquor stores regulated? Yeah, right. I can’t remember outrage at folks being refused as much booze as their insanely fat beer bellies could guzzle. And I’m talking pitchers – big, bloating beer pitchers. Is a soda pitcher – or 32oz Big Gulp – on par with a massive pitcher of beer? Sure, soda is more dangerous. When we drink too much soda we mow people down on the road – massively drunk on our sugar high. Reject this soda assault. It’s illogical. It’s pure pretzel logic. And I do love soda with pretzels.
Diet Soda Can Be Worse
Logic is with the majority – not with Soda Nazi Mayor Bloomberg, nor his intellectually dishonest flacks. Many skinny people drink soda – and not just diet. In fact, studies say diet soda, you know, the stuff without HFC (high fructose corn syrup) or sugar can be worse than the real thing. There’s a connection between weight gain and drinking diet soda. Bloomberg could have banned big sized diet soda. He could have been something of a visionary, instead of merely obsessing over sugar. The mayor could have said, “Diet soda is more damaging, even ultimately more fattening than sugary stuff.” Sadly, he went the easy route – bash sugar and try to make it evil.
Many skinny people get heart disease, die of cardiac arrest or have strokes. Many thin people get diabetes. This attack on soda is curious, if bewildering, but not surprising coming from those who don’t do their homework. It’s an easy, amateurish, reactionary straw man mess with no sugar…. no sweetness… no life. Go on, pop yourself a can of Coke, Pepsi or Dr. Pepper. If you’re drinking in NYC though, be watchful for Soda Nazi Bloomberg – so enjoy, while you can.
