When you are trying to get the word out in the horse racing community, knowing which hashtags to use on Twitter is key. Thankfully, in the past two years, this author has had 900 tweets that have produced various results based on which hashtag was used. Below, the top most successful horseracing tags from 2012 are listed.
The Kentucky Derby is top
For an American audience, they may only watch horse racing once a year. Of course, their main focus is on the Super Bowl of horse racing – the Kentucky Derby. Interestingly, #KentuckyDerby is not the only hashtag that works to draw in a large audience. Instead, adding a few other Kentucky Derby hashtags such as #2013KYDerby or #2013Derby will help your cause.
The most obvious horse racing hashtag
It seems silly to mention, but the most obvious horse racing hashtag works extremely well. However, in addition to #HorseRacing, you can also add #Sports to bring in extra audience members for your tweet.
Everyone forgets about the bettors
Do you have a hot tip for an upcoming horse race? If you want to get everyone’s attention, consider talking about horse racing picks, experts, and tips. In these cases, you cannot go wrong with hashtags including #SportsBetting, #HorseBetting #HorseBet, #Gambling, #SportsBets, #SportsPicks, #Parlay, and #Betting.
The hashtag for what is happening today
On Twitter, there is a way to get the word out if something is ongoing or happening within the next 48 hours. Although there are many variations, the one you will see associated with horse racing is #NowPlaying or its abbreviation of #NP.
A couple of hashtags to avoid
Do you know a little girl that loves horses? Chances are, she loves to get on Twitter and seeks out the hashtag #Horses. For this reason, you may also want to avoid #HorseRiding and #IHeartHorses if you solely want to address adults.
More than just Churchill Downs
We like to think that the center of the horse racing world in America is Churchill Downs. Regardless, you are more likely to find a rodeo on any given day. For this reason, if you want to see some action happening live, the hashtags you should be searching for or promoting are #Western and #Rodeo.
The horse racing business
No matter where you are in the horse racing world, it helps to stay in vogue. In this case, you can use the hashtag #HorseBiz or #HorsesForSale.
Beyond amateur horse racing fans
Do you need to get specific and address the upper echelon of horse racing fans? Although they are smaller audiences, you will have the best results with hashtags like #HorseRacingOdds, #Handicapping, #Equestrian, and #Racing.
The results are in; no hashtag needed
Anyone that writes about horse racing knows that the number one word that everyone searches for online is “horse racing results.” Although if rarely happens with other words and concepts on Twitter, you do not need to make a #HorseRacingResults hashtag. Alternatively, you can write it in plain English and it will get searched by horse racing fans.
The rise and fall of popular horse racing hashtags
With the exception of #HorseRacing, sometimes a word on Twitter temporarily falls out of favor or is seasonal. In particular, #BC12 (Breeders’ Cup 2012) is only popular for a short while and then is replaced by #BC13. For this reason, save yourself some trouble and be sure to check in with your hashtag before you use it. After all, you should always use each tweet wisely in order to avoid looking like a spammer.
