Springtime for travelers also means holiday breaks. For pet owners, that might equate to leaving four-legged loved ones behind. Not so fast. More and more hotels are taking notice when it comes to people and their love for pets, launching programs that give owners traveling with animal friends options to bring them along and enjoy vacations together.
Whether it’s a ski locale in the mountains, a road trip to California’s golden coast, or a stay in the big city, there are programs to pamper pets on holiday.
Spring Skiing and a Dog Named Bachelor
I met a tired hound named Bachelor in the lobby at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch on a recent ski trip to Colorado. Along with pal Minor, a golden Labrador, the two pet ambassadors for the hotel’s animal-friendly programs had taken in a full day of playing catch, meeting with guests, and launching a new program called Pampered Paws for a Cause, through which the resort donates $25 per pet stay to the ASPCA.
Not just for ski season, Bachelor and Minor welcome pet guests year round. For $125 for a three-night pet package and $25 per additional night thereafter, amenities for pooch guests abound with Bachelor’s “Bachelor parties” encouraging meet and play (an RSVP to the concierge is necessary), “swag” bags including a pewter wine-barrel charm, and premium pet supplies. No coin is spared when it comes to organic, all-natural gourmet dog food and treats while pet guests relish in their stay. Doggie daybreak and twilight hikes and a pampered pup in-room doggie massages are also available.
Beach Time in California
Loews Hotels offers pet-friendly hotels around the United States. The “Loews Loves Pets” program is considered not just a pet program, but a family program, embracing the notion that pets are, indeed, part of the family.
The program is available for cat and dog pet owners. For a $25 one-time fee per stay, pets get a special check-in to kick of their vacation with a goodie bag filled with a notification pet tag, bowl, and rawhide treats. In-room dining is available with a special derived pet menu to satiate even the pickiest of palates. Pet beds, scratching posts, collars, leashes, litter boxes, and pooper-scoopers are all included.
California is known for its year-round nice weather. Loews’ guests and their pets can enjoy local dog walking routes along the beach route of Santa Monica, Main Street, and Venice Beach areas – all within walking distance of the hotel.
Happy Hour and the Politics of Being “Dog” Around the D.C. Area
Alexandria, Virginia’s, Hotel Monaco accepts any number of pets without any weight or size restriction free of charge. Like the hotels mentioned above, animal amenities come along with check-in. The doggy yappy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is for both guests and their animal friends. Charlie, the hotel’s “director of pet relations” (complete with his own business card), hosts this event and is always involved with all things pooch. He actually helped launch the happy hours at the hotel; starting in April, yappy hour runs through the end of October, wrapping up with a festive Halloween extravaganza and party.
