COMMENTARY | Pat Robertson is known for some opinions that do not necessarily coincide with mainstream America. He is a conservative Christian who has often made statements that have offended people with subjects such as natural disasters and gay marriage. He has once again created a buzz by supporting the legalization of marijuana, which has even stunned advocates of marijuana legalization. This seems like a contradiction of beliefs for a conservative Christian such as Pat Robertson.
First of all, marijuana is a drug and has consequences for those who use it regularly. While marijuana is probably one of the illegal drugs that is considered less harmful than others it is still not without negative effects. Users of marijuana will experience a disruption the chemical balance of the brain. This in turn inhibits the user their ability to learn and will also result in depression. Thus, a downward spiral of destruction begins. I have personally seen it time and time again with people I have known throughout my life, and unfortunately, some are no longer with us due to their illegal drug use.
Once a person becomes addicted to marijuana the side effects become even worse resulting in impaired brain function that could inhibit someone from performing academically to their potential as well as in other areas of their life where they will not be able to achieve what they would have otherwise. Our society is already stricken with enough problems. What is the sense of adding to it by legalizing something this harmful?
If people are not punished for using illegal drugs such as marijuana we are opening ourselves up to increased healthcare costs as more people need to seek medical care resulting from the use of marijuana and many in our society who will loose out on opportunities due to their drug use. Do you want your airline pilot smoking marijuana in between flights? What about your child’s teacher? What about the firefighter who needs to rescue your family? There are many people in our society that I certainly would not want to be addicted to marijuana if I had to depend on them. I am sure you wouldn’t either.
While society will not go down the drain by legalizing marijuana, it certainly will not help either. Our country has enough problems and we don’t need to add additional things by choice. Pat Robertson may support the legalization of marijuana, but I don’t think he is going to get a lot of support from the conservative Christian community.
