My husband is always looking for new crackers to snack on, and I try to find ones that won’t wreck my diet. Recently I discovered Jingos!, Pepperidge Farm’s new snack cracker, and we decided to give them a try. For around $3.00 you get a 7.5 oz box of Fiesta Cheddar, Parmesan Garlic or Lime and Sweet Chili flavored crackers. The crackers are small, about the size and shape of an original Frito flattened out, with a similar crunchy texture. The Jingos! crackers are baked, and they have no artificial preservatives. The ingredients list is fairly long, unlike Fritos (which have only three ingredients), but contain such things as wheat flour, vegetable oil and cornstarch – nothing too terrible – and a lot of spices.
You’ll certainly notice the spices. The crackers have a real burst of flavor for such a small cracker. My favorite was the Fiesta Cheddar, but the Parmesan Garlic was good too, with a milder flavor. I didn’t yet try the Lime Sweet Chili. That sounds a bit strange to me; but apparently lime is the up and coming flavor, so if you like it on other chips, you’ll probably like it on these crackers.
As for nutrition, a serving of 23 crackers yields 140 calories with 4 grams of fat, and that fat is the “good” kinds, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. The Jingos! crackers have zero cholesterol, but the sodium is 280 mg, fairly moderate, but you need to be aware of it. These crackers have 22g of carbohydrates, not too bad at all.
I don’t eat a lot of crackers, but I find that when I am hungry for them, I only need 12 (half a serving) to satisfy me due to the sharp flavor. I get the “chip” craving out of my system with less nutritional mayhem. (Fritos, for instance, has 160 calories for 32 chips, but the fat content is much higher, although, ironically, the sodium is only 160mg). Jingos! crackers go well with a sandwich and an apple, or just by themselves for a small snack with a large payoff in flavor.
If you are concerned about the fat content in your chips, and want an alternative, or if you just like a variety of crackers to snack on, you might give Pepperidge Farm’s Jingos! a try. I think Pepperidge Farm has a winner with its new Jingos! crackers. Now if I could just get brave enough to try the Lime and Sweet Chili flavor.
