Preparing to Paint a Room the Right Way!

by pop tug

As you wake up this morning, you take a look around, and decide it is time your home to have a makeover. Here are some useful tips to make sure your room makeover doesn’t only achieve the best results, but also the best bang for your buck.

  • 1. Preparation can be time consuming, but….

Ok, ok – I know it is difficult to not just jump in the project – so let me start off by saying how important it is that you prepare properly. It is a necessity to prepare the surface (whether it is inside, outside, the walls, or the floors). Why? It can make all the difference in the final results.

  • 2. Though your son and daughter wrote on the wall with permanent marker – it doesn’t mean that…

Paint only covers discoloration – not blemishes.

  • 3. I know it is hard, but make an investment in good paint, brushes, and rollers!

If you purchase cheap paint – it has the habit of turning pale after a couple of years because it is made with more filler than pigment. As for the rollers and brushes, just like any good artist, you don’t want bristles or clumps of fuzz stuck to your work!

  • 4. Protect your furniture and all matter that you are not painting.

Listen, I know it is a pain in the rear end, but taking the time to use painter’s tape, masking, draping light fixtures, and drop cloths – It really is a necessity. Paint always’ spatters, no matter how careful you are trying to be!

  • 5. Clean your surface properly.

It is important to wipe down your walls and trim with a phosphate-free wall cleaner. The wall must then be rinsed well with clean water. Make sure you allow the surface time to dry.

  • 6. Why must I fill exterior cracks with caulk?

Caulk is a great tool that allows the surface to be smooth – and free of cracks, before you start painting. Be sure to use a wet finger for transition between surfaces.

  • 7. Yes folks! You must prime!

Primer is important because it forms a bond between whatever you are painting and the paint. Other words, it gives a nicer and cleaner finish.

  • 8. Practice your painting design (This can be fun!)

You can practice a design technique on a sheet of poster board until you reach the look you want. There are numerous differently effects that can be used with glaze products, even if the same colors are being used.

Remember: Paint chips are notorious for looking completely different once they are on the wall. Be sure to use a test strip before going to town because the light in a room can make the color of the wall appear different. Happy painting!
