About a year ago, I was rearranging my kitchen pantry when I came to realize that I was a shopaholic. My impetus to do this was to find a few cans of food to donate for the food drive put on by the letter carriers. It was a terrible way to find out, since my realization came from having to dispose of food I would have preferred to donate to those who truly would enjoy it more than me.
Wow, I Do Like Buying Food!!!
Buying food has always been something I have enjoyed to do since I was a young kid. After eating it, buying more was always a family activity as a youngster. Since my mother was an entrepreneur who could work-from-home, my brother and I always had to join her at the supermarket. Even though my mother always taught me how to stretch a dollar, I took that as every deal is a great deal. After many years, I learned that was not the case.
What Made Me Think I Would Enjoy This?
There was food I was finding that I thought to myself why I bought something I did not enjoy to eat. Some of the stuff I threw out was fruit cocktail, assorted varieties of canned vegetables and canned lunch meat. All of this food would be foodstuffs that people who were truly needy would have enjoyed. On top of that, I started storing food all throughout the house. It was being stored under the beds of bedrooms, the garage and the bathroom. Even though I have always lived in areas where keeping food stored for emergencies is a necessity, much of this food would have been useless in a state of emergency.
I Have Tried My Best To Change My Ways
Since I have realized that I was a shopaholic, especially for food, I try to buy only the food I need. The only time I try to take advantage of deals is when I can withstand the new inventory, buy food at a reasonable price and will try to enjoy it as soon as possible. Though I am not always perfect or have to build up my emergency stash of food, I think I have gotten much better over the year when it comes to buying food.
As a matter of fact, I think it has made me better to work on other issues in my life. I focused on making myself better and have become a much more patient person. I do have moments of weakness and want to buy everything in a supermarket. For instance, I was recently in the supermarket. After sampling some sausage, I considered buying it because a set of several items were given for free if we bought a two pound package. Though the rest of the free stuff made the offer enticing, I chose to hold off for a few days since I lacked space for so much sausage and the desire to enjoy all of it.
