Mapping of the Human Genome
A genome is essentially the entire genetic make- up of a creature. The Human Genome Project (HGP) was one of the great feats medical in history. It was the mapping and sequencing of all of the genes of our species Homo sapiens. Completed in April 2003, the HGP gave us the ability to read the complete genetic blueprint for building a human being.
We now have the information needed to tweak the genes of unborn children to make sure he will have a better chance of overcoming diseases and disabilities. This is called Eugenics and it is controversial. Just like anything else we can use this for good or abuse it.
Stem Cells and Stem Cell Research
Stem cells have the amazing potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during the early years of life. They serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing to replenish other cells. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a brain cell or a muscle cell. Imagine the restorative aid this technology could give to young infants with birth defects.
Minimally Invasive Medical Procedures
A minimally invasive medical procedure is one that is done by avoiding traditional incisions and entering the body through the skin or through a body cavity or anatomical opening with the smallest damage and trauma possible. This procedures causes faster healing because of smaller surgical wounds. Coupled with new therapeutic programs that stress patient activity faster recovery time is achieved. Also the patients are exposed to less medication and endure lesser pain. There is currently a call to make minimally invasive techniques the norm in surgical medicine.
The Large Hadron Collider
The Large Hadron Collider was built to answer question in particle physics. Certain particles called fundamental particles make up everything in the Universe. The information that the LHP can give past the level of the Standard Model will allow for a myriad of possibilities. These opportunities do not apply to just scientific data. The possibilities are endless. There can be findings that lead to more powerful computers or new technologies. Advancements in the fields of medicine and health are particularly attractive prospects.
Indoor Controlled Growing Environments
Higher plant yield discoveries may be the answer to world food shortages. When grown outdoors plant photosynthesis is only about 9% efficient. With the new technologies which involve controlling lighting by using ultraviolet light increased efficiency in plant growth and yield are achieved. The current developments allow for growing food and achieving the same yields with less energy and water requirements. By keeping the plants in a contained system, can recycle and recapture evaporated water which helps them grow crops using just one tenth the water. Less water usage of course reduces the cost substantially. Harvesting and planting indoors also means better pest control leading to better organic farming eliminating the need for pesticides. Structures can be built virtually everywhere which would mean fresher food with less costs of transportation.
