Review of Southgate Canned Chili

by pop tug

My wife and I decided to have chili dogs a few days ago and, since we really didn’t have a whole lot of extra money to spend and had to go to Dollar Tree anyway, ended up looking for a can of chili there. We ultimately purchased a can of Southgate Chili.

The decision to buy this brand was based solely on price (it was $1). I had never heard of it before, had never tried it and, to be honest, because of where I was buying it from, had some doubts about it. However, I have purchased bargain canned chili before and have had decent experiences when I did so I was willing to give it a try.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major disappointment.

One of the first things I noticed about this chili was how thin it was. Again, I planned on using this for chili dogs and would have preferred something thicker. This was very runny when I dumped it out of the can and cooking it made it much worse. By the time it was done, it looked like brown water with some beans and meat and, in order to use it on the chili dogs; I had to drain it a bit.

Despite this, I did decide to give this chili a try in the hopes the taste would make up for the lack of thickness. That, unfortunately, didn’t happen. It honestly tasted just as bad as it looked. There was no flavor to it at all and, if it weren’t for the hotdogs themselves and a ton of shredded cheese, I’m not sure I would have gotten through even one serving of this.

I have had plenty of luck buying other food products at Dollar Tree in the past. But, this is one product I have no intention of buying again and do not recommend purchasing it.
