The brightly painted cottage, with coordinating lime green British phone booth, caught our attention as we searched for a lunch spot. From the playful graffiti that covers every inch of the building, to the license plates that adorn the walls, there is a whimsical atmosphere in this casual dining destination. Friendly servers greeted and seated us; inviting our group of four to husk peanuts and throw the shells to the floor.
Surveying the menu, we soon realized that River City Cafe is famous for burgers. As they say: “It’s all about the burger!’
I chose the vegetarian burger; AKA as the Woodstock Burger. It comes topped with marinated cucumbers, lettuce, tomato, sweet basil pesto sauce and swiss cheese on a whole wheat bun. You can leave out the swiss cheese to make it vegan, but I chose to keep it cheesy. Firm veggie burgers from the grocery store are what I’m used to, so when I first bit into the soft texture of the Woodstock Burger, I thought I wouldn’t like it. However, the burger was delicious. It was my first taste of marinated cucumbers; excellent. The flavor blended well with the pesto and swiss. $7.99
FYI, you may have any of the burgers on the menu made with veggie or turkey burgers.
My husband had the Havana Burger, and I’ll quote: “It was awesome, especially the spicy mustard.” The Havana Burger is topped with grilled smoked ham, swiss cheese, tomato, pickles and spicy mustard. $6.99
The Bacon Cheeseburger with hickory smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard and mayo was loved by the lady eating for two. $7.99
Her husband enjoyed his California Pesto Burger; topped with lettuce, tomato, marinated cucumbers, sweet basil pesto sauce and monterey jack cheese. $7.99
Burgers come with a pile of fries, or you may opt for the onion rings. The fries are made from scratch in the River City Cafe’s kitchen and were tasty and fresh. However, they could have used a bit more seasoning. If you order the onion rings with your burger, you get two gigantic rings; I found them to be slightly bland.
Other items available include deli sandwiches, chicken burgers and a variety of appetizers including a blooming onion, chicken wings, fried zucchini and grouper bites. You may also choose from a variety of fries, such as fire fries with spicy toppings and cheese fries covered with chili or bacon.
River City Cafe is the place, if you’re looking for awesome burgers in an atmosphere of fun.
