Now that we know whom Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has chosen to run on his ticket, we can get a better idea of what kind of White House can be expected if the Romney/Ryan ticket wins in November.
Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is most popular with Tea Party conservatives because of his budget plan, which would cut social programs for the poor as a method to lower the deficit but at the same time, provide tax cuts for the wealthy.
Mitt Romney’s plans for tax cuts would give millionaires an $87,000 a year tax cut while 95 percent of the population’s taxes will go up 1.2 percent.
Paul Ryan’s highly touted budget plan would drop the highest tax rate down to 25 percent from next year’s 39.6 percent. Looks like the wealthy will do just fine while the rest of us take on even more of a tax burden, under either of the Romney or Ryan plan.
I predict the choice of Ryan as his running mate will help Romney among Tea Party Republicans who like most conservatives, have not felt that comfortable with their final choice, Mitt Romney himself. I doubt that will help him much in the polls anyway because Tea Party Republicans will be pouring out in droves out of their hate for President Barack Obama, no matter who his running mate is.
As far as Ryan’s signature budget plan, Mitt Romney has spoken in the past in favor of the budget, saying at one point “I applaud it, it’s an excellent piece of work, and very much needed.”
Now he seems to want to distance himself from that plan by saying, “I have my budget plan, and that’s the budget plan we’re going to run on.” Of course, we must remember, this is Mitt Romney and he does have a tendency to change his politics along with his moral compass every time the tide comes in.
The conventions are the next phase on the election calendar and they should be telling. Both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan’s speech at their convention hopefully will tell us what they intend to do with the country, if elected.
I suspect it will be much like Bill Clinton calls it when he said, “This is crazy – he’s got an opponent who basically wants to do what they did before, on steroids, which will get you the same consequences you got before, on steroids.” Said during a fund-raiser he was doing in Virginia with Obama, he was referring to the Bush years and what they did to this country, and now Mitt Romney wants to do the same thing but much worse.
Then once we can get past the conventions, we get to my favorite part of the election season; the presidential debates.
We will have Mitt Romney, the man who seems to have no core, running against our president, Barack Obama, who knows how to speak to the average citizen and he relates to them.
There will be three presidential debates, which will give plenty of time for those Americans who have not been paying attention up to this point, finally to get a good look at Mitt Romney up close – which I am anxious to see.
Then we will have Rep. Paul Ryan, a Catholic who wants to turn Medicare into a voucher system and make seniors pay more out-of-pocket cost for their health care, running against Vice President Joe Biden. Vice President Biden is a Catholic too but he does not want to throw hurt upon seniors in order to afford a tax cut for millionaires.
Currently, the poll numbers are too close to tell of what is going to happen this November Election Day, but we do know that Barack Obama has kept a small but steady lead over Mitt Romney by at least some percentage points. We also know the country’s political landscape is considerably divided with only a small percentage of independents undecided at this point, and who ultimately are those who will decide this election.
In my opinion, the presidential debates will be the real turning point, the point where ordinary Americans take a close look at Mitt Romney, the would-be president. We, who have paid close attention to this election, remember well the Republican primary debates and we know the hand that Romney will probably be dealing against Obama in a debate.
I am certain Mitt Romney will not let us down and he will reveal for the entire American public to see, the level of man he is. I am also more than certain, that our president Barack Obama will shine with the convictions of his deeds. Then our faith must be in all of us to make the right decision in the voting booth come this November.
