One of today’s hot button topics in politics is the high rolling campaign spending that is going on. Both Democrats and Republicans are pumping out millions and millions of dollars to obtain your vote. Now for some voters I am pretty sure this does not matter because they have already made up their minds. There are a lot of people on the other hand who believe that the guy who can spend the most money will win because he or she will be able to influence the people. I am not sure how much it all really matters in November but I do know that it has sparked an intense debate.
From watching the discussion it seems that Democrats and Republicans flip flop on the position based on when whichever one happens to be raising more money at the time. I have seen the solution float around that we just cap campaign spending and I completely agree. Lets do like professional sports and make it where campaigns can only spend a set amount. Let the be a sliding scale from the presidential campaign all way down to you local city council. Now I realize this will never happen because there are too many people exploiting the current system and getting revenue through a variety of ways through political campaigns but its nice to play what if.
Not only would candidates have to make sure their message is heard the right way the first time but it would allow the people to just sit back and listen. Right now its easier to make mistakes on the road to office if you have almost an unlimited budget. If you only have a handful of commercials then there is only time to give your message on the issues. So lets institute salary cap politics.
For those of you who are not familiar with sports salary caps. In pro football, basketball and hockey the teams are limited to a set amount set by the league on how much can be spent on players salaries each year. Let equate players to campaign resources for the sake of this discussion. Teams can not just over spend on the best players they are forced to budget and balance their rosters. Right now our political landscape is similar to baseball where the Yankees can screw up as much as they want.
This would also show us the citizens that these people can be effective money managers. Really how much can we trust politicians with our money if they can’t run a campaign. I believe the government itself shouldn’t be operating on this unlimited budget where the money never runs out or we they can just request more. If the person you are thinking about voting for blows all their money early in the race then they may not be a good choice.
