Many people in this world have a misconception. They think that if a person is good, they will go to heaven. In his book, How Good is Good Enough by Andy Stanley, he explains how this assumption is totally false and how it really makes no sense.
Stanley goes on to say that the Bible does not mention anything at all about good people going to heaven. He gives the example of the thief hanging on the cross next to Jesus. Jesus said to the thief that he would be in paradise with him today. This thief was not a good person at all. In fact he was a criminal all of his life.
The point is that the thief asked Jesus to forgive him and that it why Jesus responded the way he did. What Stanley is trying to say is that good people do not go to heaven, but the forgiven ones do.
Stanley talks about what is wrong with this popular misconception and also how to really get to heaven. According to Stanley, this is a theory that has no substance. I would recommend reading this book so that we will know how to answer people who believe in this theory.
Many people think that because they are good in the sense that they do not steal, kill or commit adultery, that they will make it to heaven. While all this is important to avoid because it is sinful, there is much more to someone getting into heaven. Many will say that they give to charities, aide in feeding and clothing the poor, and do many things to help others. The Bible is clear that we are not saved by our good works.
Recently, I saw Bill Weiss on television, the author of 23 Minutes in Hell. He gave a good comparison for those who think that they will go to heaven because they are a good person. He told a story of a lady going to a rich man’s house and saying that she wants to live in his house because she is a good person. The owner of the house refused that lady because he did not know her. No one would want a stranger living with them.
It is not about being a good person. It is all about having a relationship with God and accepting his gift of sending Jesus to die on the cross. Bill said that people may live a good life and help others. Then when they come to the end of their life and they are dying, they ask God to let them in heaven because they were a good person. He will say “I do not know you because you did not have a relationship with me.”
There are many good people who hate God and want nothing to do with him at all. They help others and are good in every way, but why should these people be allowed to enter God’s heaven? If they can’t stand him, then they will not be able to be in his Presence. No one on earth would ask someone to live with them if they hated that person. There is no way that they can dwell together if there is hatred and strife.
You may be the nicest person on earth, but without Jesus in your life, you will not get to heaven. The Bible says that “He is the way the truth and the life.” You do not have to be wicked or do evil things to go to hell. To make it to heaven your name must be written in the Lamb’s book of life. Do you know Jesus as your Savior? If not, do not be fooled. The Bible is very clear that hell is a real place for those who reject Christ. Make your decision to follow Jesus today and live a life that is pleasing to him. You can be assured that heaven will be your eternal home. Once you die, it is too late.
