Star Wars the Clone Wars launch its season 5 premiere on September 28th on the Cartoon Network. The first episode started with Darth Maul and Savage Opress plotting their revenge and going to work in making their plan a reality. The first episode was fast paced and filled with a lot of action, but has the show improved over the years?
Let’s take a look at all of the pros and cons of the season.
The story for Star Wars the Clone wars has been pretty consistent so far. I like how it builds up their villains and characters and how the story is progressive and continues from one season into the next, instead of being just a bunch of side missions to fill in the episodes. I also like Ashoka’s storyline and how she is starting to grow into a larger role in the Clone Wars story. I’m still trying to figure out if she will live or die, and if she does live passed Order 66, where does she go?
Since we already know the fates of Obi-Wan and Anakin, I watch it more so to see the fates of everyone else that was excluded from the movies. Showing the rebel alliance on Onderon was also interesting because it reminded me a lot of Star Wars battlefront. I’m hoping that we’ll see more of those rebels in the future.
I love the directing of the show. There was a scene where the camera showed Anakin and a rebel hiding out on a rooftop and the shot went up and away from them, over the city, and zoomed in to show the ruler of the city standing on the balcony all in one continuous shot. The directing and storylines for Star Wars the Clone wars are very impressive.
The animation quality for Star Wars the Clone wars has improved from when the show first started. Every now and then we will get a scene where the people move a bit… clunky, but those scenes are now far and few. The combat scenes are still a bit too fast and needs to slow down a bit. What I mean by this is their actual movements for attacking and blocking is very fast and choppy. They don’t move like people they instead move like video game animations.
I would like the battles to be a bit slower so that we can see every attack, every block, and every dodge that the character performs so that we get a clear view of their actions. Other than that the animations are beautiful. The Darth Maul and Savage Opress battle was very entertaining when they were fighting against Obi-Wan, and the end of the battle took some twist I didn’t see coming.
Overall I enjoyed the first several episodes of Season 5 and I’m sure the rest of the season will continue to improve. If you want to watch Star Wars the Clone wars tune in to the Cartoon Network on Saturday mornings at 9:30AM EST.
The next episode “Tipping points” will air on October 27th, and the season will continue on from there throughout the month of November.
