The days are getting shorter and colder so all you want to do is stay under the covers and hibernate. It’s easy to stay active during the warm months, but when the days start getting chilly how do you keep going? The holidays bring lots of food which is not so good for the waistline. I used to gain about 15 pounds during the winter and had to struggle to get them off before bathing suit weather. I have found some great ways to stay slim and even lose some weight during the winter so I can look good in my bikini.
Having a library of fun workout videos is an inexpensive and easy way to stay out of the cold, but get plenty of exercise. I have the P90X system, a yoga video, a hip hop dance video, and a boxing video. I use videos when the weather is too gloomy and miserable to go out. Rotating routines keeps me from getting bored and works different muscles. You can find exercise videos to buy online or in sporting goods stores. All you need for your home is a set of resistance bands or weights, a mat, and space to move around.
Membership at a gym
If you enjoy being around other people for motivation, you can try a gym or fitness club membership. I have a membership at my local gym and enjoy going swimming, taking classes, and weight training. This is a good idea if you are not motivated enough to keep up a home routine or if you like to socialize. My gym has a pool, a weight room, and plenty of fun classes such as zumba, spin class, and Pilates. Many gyms offer specials around the holidays so it can be pretty inexpensive.
For those of you that are hard core and like to get outside even when it’s freezing, here are some tips to keep you safe and warm. Make sure you invest in some winter gear. I recommend some good gloves, running tights, a headband or toboggan, and a lightweight, warm jacket. Clothing that hugs your body is better at keeping your body heat in than baggy clothes. Sporting goods stores sell running tights for men and women and you can wear shorts over them if you’re not comfortable wearing them alone. They also sell neck gaiters or bandanas to wear around your neck and keep your nose and mouth covered. Keeping your nose and mouth covered will help the air you breathe be warmer and better for your lungs. While you walk or run outside, keep a bandana for blowing your nose and chap stick for your lips. Exercising outside gets rid of my cabin fever and I enjoy the beautiful winter scenery.
I like to vary my exercise choices and use each of these ideas throughout the winter to stay in shape. Variety is the key to success when finding and sticking with an exercise routine. Stay warm and above all have fun!
